Class Agenda 1/15/15 1. ACT Lesson Sign-Up (first come, first serve) 2. Socratic Seminar 3. Reflection 4. Quest for Redemption Essay Assignment – Due Monday, January 26 Outline Due on 1/20/15 Today you will, orally, justify your opinion using text as a support in a socratic circle with expanding discussion card questions and phrases such as “While ________ makes a good point, I think that…” or “I would like to challenge that idea by saying that…”

ACT Lesson Sign Up Read the assignment paper Make it interesting! Boring is BORING! Become and expert- you will never forget these lessons! MUST be in class on the due date of the presentation for points; if you are absent, you must create a new lesson to teach to the class on a separate day by yourself Go to ACT Prep tab at www.mrstesta.com for sample PowerPoint, College Readiness Benchmark Standards, and sample tests/questions

Socratic Seminar We will use the discussion cards for speaking in the inner circle, but you do NOT need to use the sentence frames on the back. When you speak, you must hold up the card that indicates what you will say. After you use this card, put it down in front of you. Hold the remaining cards in your hands. You may not use a card twice during the discussion. The outer circle will use the rubric to mark when you speak. You may discuss the theme of redemption in The Kite Runner, “On War and Redemption”, and your own questions to help you create your essay.

Reflection Write about 2-3 “Aha!” moments or connections made during the seminar If you did not make a connection or “Aha!” moment, write a reflection of your opinions around the theme of redemption as discussed in the Socratic Seminar

Quest for Redemption Essay Read the guidelines for the essay Outline WITH CLEAR THESIS STATEMENT is due on Tuesday, January 20, 2015. You will lose writer’s workshop points in class that day if you do not have your outline We will discuss the use of proper citation in an essay in class on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 The final typed draft of the essay is due on Monday, January 26, 2015. You may print this and turn it in or email to me. An additional copy of the essay guidelines is located on my web site at www.mrstesta.weebly.com
