06 / 09 Wednesday Kaupapa Describe the characteristics of seven types of Electromagnetic Radiation from the Sun

Do you remember? What is radiation?

Radiation is “transfer of energy”. It is also called wave. Examples: Mexican wave Water ripples Earthquake Radio wave from a radio transmitter

Seismic (Earthquake) Waves

The Radiations from the Sun

Practical: Focusing the Sun’s radiation

The Seven types of Electromagnetic Radiation The sun sends tremendous amounts of energy towards the Earth in the form of “Electromagnetic Radiation”. There are seven different types of EM Radiation.

Description / Everyday use Electromagnetic Radiation Name Frequency Range (Hz) Wavelength (m) Description / Everyday use Radiowave 3 kHz ~ 300 MHz 1 mm ~ 100 km

Frequency & Wavelength

Frequency: how many times the wave oscillates in one second Wavelength: the length of one complete waveform

Why is it called Electromagnetic Radiation?

Radio Wave f = 3 kHz ~ 300 MHz λ = 100 km ~ 1 mm

Micro Wave f = 300 MHz ~ 300 GHz λ = 1 m ~ 1 mm

Infrared f = 300 GHz ~ 400 THz λ = 1 mm ~ 750 nm

Visible Light f = 400 THz ~ 770 THz λ = 750 nm ~ 390 nm

Ultra violet (UV) f = 770 THz ~ 30 PHz λ = 390 nm ~ 10 nm

X-ray f = 30 PHz ~ 30 EHz λ = 10 nm ~ 0.01 nm

Gamma ray f = higher than 30 EHz λ = shorter than 0.01 nm

The Seven types of EM Radiations Radiowave Microwave Infra-Red Visible Light Ultra Violet X-ray Gamma Ray

What have we learnt today? What are the names of the seven Electromagnetic Radiations?
