HOMEWORK: Boxes and Bullets Outline in green section On your desk: Last night’s homework Writer’s notebook Writing utensil Put everything else away. Begin your quick write.

Thesis Statements What is a“thesis”? Your claim/thesis is the heart of your essay, therefore, it needs to be rock solid before you begin any writing at all. Your claim will not only come up again and again in your writing, but it will also summarize exactly what it is you hope to prove in your essay. We are still in the brainstorming phase of the writing process and will begin planning today.

ALL OF US WILL LEARN: As great essayists, we will be able to hone our ideas about theme into a coherent claim with supporting reasons.

Possible Claims: Jealousy makes people selfish. When jealousy and grief get the best of us, everyone suffers. When you act out of jealousy, you will feel guilty. It is difficult to watch someone grieve what you never had.

Outlining: Boxes and Bullets Claim: In the story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury, one of the story’s major themes is that when jealousy and grief get the best of us, everyone suffers because Margot’s grief over Earth hurts the other children, the children then lash out in jealousy towards her, and ultimately everyone is hurt. Reason a: Margot’s grief over Earth hurts the children around her who didn’t get as much time there as she did. Reason b: The children act out in their jealousy and cause Margot to suffer another loss. Reason c: The children feel guilt and shame at the end because of the way they allowed their jealousy to get out of hand.

In your green section Essay Outline Claim: Reason a: Reason b: Reason c: Claim:

Write like a literature scholar The repeated sounds make it feel like you are in the action of the scene. Collins’s use of alliteration plunges the reader into the action of the scene.
