Evolution of the Data Center CONSOLIDATION of assets VIRTUALIZATION of servers & storage CONVERGENCE of networks QFX3500 LAN SAN FCoE Now there is a lot of talk about designing and building out a green, extremely efficient virtual data center and Network Convergence plays a big part in that. You see, there are many degrees of data center efficiency, and there are several key steps companies need to take to arrive at an Intelligent Converged Data Center. The first step of data center efficiency is the consolidation of physical servers and storage systems. We’re all familiar with deploying massive consolidation strategies whereby you consolidate your stranded midrange storage systems into your high-end enterprise-class storage systems and the same applies for servers. The next step beyond consolidation is the virtualization of your physical assets . For blade servers, this means using hypervisors to create dozens or hundreds of virtual machines in a single system. For storage devices, this means virtualizing multiple storage systems under common management so that they can be partitioned like one giant hard drive. Now the next degree of data center efficiency—one step beyond virtualization—is the convergence of your networks. You can consolidate your assets, you can virtualize them, but ultimately your data center will not be operating at peak levels of efficiency unless you have converged your mixed protocols supporting your common applications. Network Convergence, along with Virtualization of the server, network and storage infrastructure are driving the next gen data center toward a service-based, cloud-enabled computing model Network Convergence lowers both CAPEX and OPEX as there are a lot less adapters, switches, and cables to buy and a lot less power and cooling required. The Transition to convergence can be done in a phased approach, protecting investments in existing LAN and SAN equipment, tools and training, avoiding disruptions to mission-critical systems and applications. Convergence improves IT’s ability to provide services to their clients. A converged network enables applications to be implemented over whatever protocols provide the service levels that are appropriate for the business requirements of the applications.
