Welcome to Barnes Farm Infants Year Two SATS talk February 2018

What will they look like? Your child will be encouraged to think of SATS as ‘just another way to show us what they can do’. At Barnes Farm Infants, we have considerable flexibility in how we implement the tests and much of it will feel like a normal classroom day. Our class teachers will do their best to ensure that children are not at all concerned about the tests. To allow this, the tests do not need to be taken on a specific day, but can be throughout the month of May, near the end of Year 2, with pupils either individually, in groups or all together as a class. There are six papers altogether across English and mathematics.

Scaled score/115 Schools can choose their own assessment methods during the child’s journey through school (we currently use Target Tracker as do many other schools around the country) Key Stage tests will provide children with a scaled score. Each child will get a score out of 115. 100 is the expected score a child is to achieve at the end of KS1. KS1 tests will remain statutory until 2023.

SATS week We work in class to prepare the children for SATS. When they take their SATS, they will not be put under any pressure and many of the children enjoy the ‘special work’ they are doing. They will be working in their own classrooms or go off in small groups. All Year Two children around the country will be taking their SATS assessments in May, with final assessments being sent to county at the end of June. We will report the children’s results to you at the end of the school year.

Scaled scores + teacher assessment A child’s score works alongside their teacher assessment which is based on the work completed during the year and the teacher’s knowledge of their pupils abilities and strengths.

Teacher assessments will also be carried out later in the term as the Department for Education have recognised that most children will make further progress in their learning between April and the end of June when assessments are sent off for moderating.

SATS Reading test The reading test for Year 2 pupils will involve two separate papers: We will allow children as much time as they need Paper 1 and 2 both comprise of a reading booklet in which the children read at their leisure. Children will then need to answer a variety of questions such as multiple-choice, ordering events, interpreting the text and looking for key vocabulary. The texts in the reading papers will cover a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, and will get progressively more difficult towards the end of the test.

Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation Children taking Key Stage 1 SATs will sit two separate papers in grammar, spelling and punctuation: Paper 1: a 20-word spelling test taking approximately 15 minutes. Paper 2: a Grammar and Punctuation test. This will involve a mixture of selecting the right answers e.g. through multiple choice, and writing short answers.

SATS Mathematics test There are 2 Mathematics SATS papers. 1 –Mental arithmetic This test assesses the child’s confidence and mathematical fluency with whole number, place value and counting. It will take 20 minutes but is not strictly timed. 2 –Reasoning This test assesses the child’s problem solving and reasoning skills. We will complete 5 questions together as a class to ensure the children are happy with the format of the test.
