SUMDOG MAKING LEARNING FUN This presentation will give you insight into Sumdog and how it can be used to motivate the children with their math.

Engaging adaptive learning What is Sumdog? Engaging adaptive learning Sumdog is an online practice tool used in thousands of schools worldwide. It's designed to motivate children to work on math, reading, spelling and writing. As children play fun activities, they answer questions. Sumdog personalizes the questions for each child, and tracks their progress through the school standards.

Why use Sumdog? At Sumdog the mission is to help close the achievement gap - by helping every student reach their full potential through engaging them in math. Sumdog recommend children to spend at least 30 minutes each week on Sumdog, this can be broken up into smaller of chunks of time. The little and often approach gives them regular and consistent practice. When students use Sumdog for 30 mins or more a week, they will be rewarded with 100 bonus coins.

How can students access Sumdog? Sumdog can be accessed on a variety of devices: Desktops Laptops Ipads/iphones - iOS 9 minimum Tablets Android devices Children use their school logins to access Sumdog at home. If they have lost their username, password and school code then they can ask their teacher for it. If you are using Sumdog at home on an ipad/tablet/android device they need to download the free app.

What can the students do? When the children login, they will first play a warm up game before they reach their City page. These are quickfire questions that allow children to earn coins to spend in their house, and get them warmed up for the session ahead.

What can the students do? When students first use Sumdog, they do a diagnostic test where they are assessed against the standards level at which each child should be working, so Sumdog can personalize their questions. After they have completed the diagnostic test, they will be working through the standards at their own level and speed, on a personalized learning plan. Teachers can also set skills for the children to work on, this will take the form of challenges. (Students can also choose to select their own skills to work on at their level) By clicking on the green training tab they will be able select to play in training mode (personalized learning plan), practice their number bonds or practice their multiplication and division facts. Children can also view previous challenges and competitions by clicking on the training tab and selecting ‘Past activities’. WARNING - children should not be helped because this could place them at a higher level than they should be. If they do struggle more than once, it will be flagged up to the teacher.

What can the students do? Sumdog has 6 free games and 24 premium games. The children can choose to play any games and the adaptive learning engine ensures they working on the correct skill. Whatever skill the child is focusing on will appear in any game, so they can always play their favorites – keeping them engaged. When playing the games, they have the choice to play against the Sumdog robot, their classmates or other children from around the world. Don’t worry, they won’t be able to communicate with them! (Identified briefly by first name, initial and school).

How does Sumdog motivate students? Coins reward accuracy. Students earn coins for correct answers and can spend them decorating their house and garden or buying clothes for their avatar. They can earn 1 coin per correct answer in school but to encourage them to practice at home, they get double coins for correct answers outside of school hours. Pets reward progress. Once they have completed the diagnostic test, they get to choose a pet. Every time they master a new skill on Sumdog, their pet will learn a new trick. Once their pet has earned all of its tricks, they'll be able to choose a new pet. There are 10 pets to collect and each pet has 10 different tricks.

What can teachers do? Teachers can use Sumdog in a variety of ways: Set specific skills for students Individualize their learning Assess students on skills Track student’s progress Use as an intervention tool or used to extend the learning time

What can you do? Visit www.sumdog.com You can encourage students to use Sumdog at home and can see what math skills they are practicing by looking at the top of your child’s dashboard on Sumdog. You can also sign up to a free parent account. With your parent account you will be able to keep track of what your child is learning in school. You can also click on ‘Play Now’ and participate in their learning by playing the games against your child while encouraging them along the way (you’ll both play at your own level). Visit www.sumdog.com

Their scores will count towards their class score in the contest. The final score is a class average. The questions adapt to each student’s ability - so everyone has a fair chance. All contests last a week - from 8am on Friday, local time, to 8pm the following Thursday.
