Presentation transcript:

SIMPLE STEPS TO Worksite Wellness 5 SIMPLE STEPS TO Worksite Wellness Connection to 1305-1422? Why are you attending this session? Expectations? Some (limited) ww in 1305 1422. Can I assume that attendees have a desire to develop, implement, sustain ww initiatives? What success and challenges have come out of 1305 and 1422 related work?

Purpose Increase awareness of MDHHS worksite wellness tools available free of charge to employers in Michigan. From looking at the attendee list, I am assuming most if not all have a basic understanding of the business case for worksite wellness. I do not intend to spend time making the business case for worksite wellness but prefer using our time together to: Discuss barriers faced by employers in Mi when implementing evidence based interventions 2) Promote existing tools offered by MDHHS and ID additional tools and resources that may be helpful 3) Gather feedback on 5 Simple Steps

Factors Influencing Health Clinical care accounts for only 10% of population health. 80% is related to factors that can be changed. Social and economic factors are known as “social determinants of health” and include income, education, housing. Adults spend 1/3 of waking hours at work Under the current US medical system, employers pay for medical care ……. And unhealthy habits of employees Employers have an opportunity to educate and influence employee behavior- worksite wellness What do you think of when I say “worksite wellness”?

Documented Benefits of WW Improve quality of life for employees Improve morale in the workplace Reduce illness and associated direct costs including medical and pharmaceutical Positive influence on indirect costs such as absenteeism and employee productivity Attract and retain employees Is there a model or visual representation of comprehensive worksite wellness? Model provided by CDC…………. Pretty intimidating to a novice or someone with minimal time to devote to a wellness program

Worksite Wellness CDC DEFINITION: Workplace health programs are a coordinated and comprehensive set of health promotion and protection strategies implemented at the worksite that includes programs, policies, benefits, environmental supports, and links to the surrounding community designed to encourage the health and safety of all employees Make special note of the word comprehensive. Comprehensive worksite wellness includes policies, benefits, environmental supports, and links to community resources

SIMPLE STEPS TO Worksite Wellness 5 SIMPLE STEPS TO Worksite Wellness The 5 Simple Steps came out of many conversations with employers (or HR rep) who want to do something in the realm of worksite wellness but have limited staff time and no funding to devote to it. Move away from activity-based worksite wellness toward the comprehensive worksite wellness model in baby steps Evidence based interventions In no way do I want to characterize this approach as taking the place of comprehensive worksite wellness Free resource guide is about to go live on DHEW website

1. Establish a Solid Foundation 2. Assess to Inform Planning 3 1 Establish a Solid Foundation 2 Assess to Inform Planning 3 Provide Education 4 Create Supportive Environments 5 Connect with Community Resources

1 Establish a Solid Foundation select a champion Secure and align leadership support form a representative team define your mission, your “why”

2 Assess to Inform Planning Designing Healthy Environments at Work (DHEW) on-line assessment and action planning tools employee interest survey Wellness Champions, corporate leaders, wellness teams need to consider what kind of data will be most valuable to them in developing strategies and interventions. As a starting point, MDHHS offers a Designing Healthy Environments suite of tools on the DHEW website. these tools are available free of charge on mihealthtools.org/work The assessment is designed to help employers evaluate the extent to which their workplace policies and environment encourage and support employees in making healthy lifestyle choices Let’s take a look at the DHEW assessment
