Pledges Why and How? Mr Watson

Pledge: A promise or agreement to DO something Define what is meant by a pledge. Examples – Promise to do the washing up for a week. Commitment to learn to play an instrument. Can be to other people, but often most important pledges are those we make to ourselves to make us better people. 2 mins

Why Bother? Student 1: no pledges – 8 GCSEs A*-C Student 2: – 8 GCSEs A*-C- 2 pledges Student 3: – 6 GCSEs A* -C – Is a member of the cadets, helps raise money for a local charity, helps with a recycling project in school, regularly attends MFL club and is on the school football team. Who do you think is most likely to have a good interview? Get the job/place at college?

MR WATSON: My New Pledge To help and support the students of Outwood Academy Newbold in achieving their pledges. My new pledge – Share with students. Let them know that of there are things they would like to do as pledges that they are unsure about they can speak myself or VMG tutor to pass on. E.g. If there is an activity they really want to do that is not available at school at the moment, we will see what we can do or where it can be done out of school. 2 mins

SUCCESSFUL = GRADUATION! What do I need to do? Current Yr. 7 & 8 Achieve 3 to graduate into year 8 Current Yr. 9 & 10 Achieve 7 to be allowed to attend year 11 prom Current Yr. 11 Achieve 4 (subject to approval) to be allowed to attend year 11 prom SUCCESSFUL = GRADUATION!

My Ten Pledges 1. Regularly attend an Enrichment activity. 2. Represent the Academy in a sporting, cultural or academic event. 3. Take part in an outward bound residential programme. 4. Attend a national sporting, academic or cultural event. 5. Take part in an Academy production or event. 6. Take part in a formal presentation to an audience. 7. Be actively involved in an international experience. 8. Be actively involved in a community experience. 9. Participate in a fund raising event in Academy. 10. Help with the sustainability of the Academy.

Finally… If you do anything outside of school that you think counts, bring in proof – photos, video clips, newspaper cuttings etc. YOU MAY BE ABLE TO ‘BACK DATE’ YOUR PLEDGES!! Why not do a presentation to your VMG group? It’s a good way of getting pledge 6 – formal presentation to an audience. New Outcomes Challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone! If you think something gets you a pledge – ASK! ALL PLEDGES MUST BE CHECKED OFF WITH YOUR TUTOR…
