23 / 05 Tuesday Kaupapa: Describe how to perform a common laboratory test for carbon dioxide

Do you remember? Define “element” Define “compound” Describe how hydrogen gas is tested Describe how oxygen gas is tested

Gas Tests

How can we test for the presence of oxygen? Splint Test!

Splint Test In the presence of oxygen, a glowing splint will catch fire again. This is called the “splint test” – the test for oxygen.

Squeaky Pop Test

Squeaky Pop Test When hydrogen gas is brought to a flame, it burns with a “squeaky pop” noise. This is called “Squeaky pop test” – the test for hydrogen gas.

Combustion (burning)

Pouring carbon dioxide

How can we test for the presence of CO2? Limewater Test

Limewater Test In the presence of carbon dioxide gas, clear limewater will turn cloudy. This is called “limewater test” – the test for carbon dioxide gas.

Homework – due Thursday

What have we learnt today? Describe how we test for carbon dioxide
