City Centre Public Realm Strategy Transformed public realm which reconnects with the city’s iconic buildings and enables people to move freely and enjoy the city by decluttering and removal of excess street furniture. Creation of new public art and utilisation of existing art and monuments to improve wayfinding and legibility. Better connectivity through improved crossings, enhanced lighting to ensure that streets are welcoming and safe, easy to navigate and thereby encourage greater use of the city centre. The £27m project transformed city centre and retail routes to create a stunning 'peoples playground' with attractive granite paving, impressive water features, spectacular lighting, interactive public art, refurbished public squares, landscaping and newly planted trees. Created a new nightshift crew of five staff to focus on street washing hot spot areas such as; food outlets, taxi ranks, seating areas and bin surrounds. Existing daytime cleansing teams able to undertake more detailed cleansing and to maintain high standards of street cleanliness for public realm. Hull City Council has successfully driven forward a major transformation within the heart of the city, ambitiously delivering over five hectares within an 18 month programme, now complete the route between the city’s transport interchange, historic Old Town, retail quarter and waterfront has been transformed, including the regeneration of some of the city’s public squares.
