A Level transition to Sociology project This research-based project is designed to give you an ideal grounding for A-level study. Research and complete all of the tasks to give you a good idea of what to expect on a Sociology course. If you then choose to study Sociology this will give you a good head start for your A Level Sociology. Present the tasks in any format you like – this could be a powerpoint or a poster, or a leaflet, or word processed on an A4. What is Sociology? Sociology is an exciting subject that challenges your everyday experiences. It is the study of the relationship between the individual and society. Sociologists are interested in why society works in the way that it does and the extent to which our behaviour and opportunities can be shaped by our social class, age, gender and race.

Task 2: Topic: Peeling those Sociological theories: The main points This is one from the Sociology Captains Task 2: Topic: Peeling those Sociological theories: The main points There are lots of different theories about how society shapes individuals or how individuals shape society . You need to have a decent idea of what functionalism , Marxism , feminism and interactionism . Your task… In order to show your potential as a Sociology master with great Sociological imagination , each task needs to be complete . Research the basic theorist’s views of individuals and society , for functionalists, Marxists, Feminists and interactionists (Complete the tasks in a form of a PowerPoint, word document, poster etc.) You have reached the top , well done !! Gold level – find one article from the news that matches the main ideas of each theory and explain how it does this . Silver level – Create a questionnaire that measures what type of sociologist you are (for example whether you are a functionalist, Marxist , feminist or interactionists) Bronze level : Learn the main points of each theory and include key concepts for each theory and define these (sum this up in a table )

Now for Mr Sumana’s challenge task Task 3: The Sociology of my Facebook profile A core issue with sociologists still is how they see society . Some argue from a structural view (society shapes individual ) while others argue from an agency approach (we as individuals can shape society through our actions). Your ultimate task is to carry out a sociological investigation of your own Facebook profile. Follow these steps that will help you to do this. Step 1 : what is the article about and find out the meanings of five words you come across that you do not understand Step 2 : what do you agree with from the article ? What do you disagree with from the article ? Step 3 : investigate your Facebook profile : explain your profile from the different viewpoints found in the article and use evidence from your own Facebook profile . Lastly also include a picture of your Facebook profile

The Course Structure A Level Exam (2 years) (Each paper is 2 hours) A Level Paper 1: Education, Methods in Context and Theory and Methods. A Level Paper 2: Families and Households plus Beliefs in Society. A Level Paper 3: Crime and Deviance plus Theory & Methods. This is an essay writing based subject, regular closed book timed assessments. You will be expected to do a lot of independent study & pre-reading before every lesson.
