Michelle Fenwick Programme Manager Developing the Young Workforce Edinburgh, Midlothian and East Lothian Developing the Young Workforce, Scotland’s Youth Employment Strategy; asks business to be more involved in shaping and recruiting youth talent. Educators and businesses working together as co-investors to create a skilled workforce for Scotland’s future. This ask makes business sense.

Governance Employer Led Regional Focus Key Features: EMPLOYER LEAD: Many times over have we heard reference to the fact that young people could be seen as not work or industry ready, education have failed in preparing young people for employment! But is this the case – really? This was a key piece picked up on in the Wood Commission, a report into how we prepare young people for the world of work and how we can do better and have a world class vocational education system, reducing youth unemployment levels to those of the best performing countries in Europe. Education have a focus on academic achievement and it can be difficult for teachers and those working in education to bring the curriculum to life and put learning into the real world context, the labour market changes, we are aware of changing demand sectors, changing growth sectors, changes in technology affecting job roles and functions and how we do business, it is vital that business takes a lead. Our governance structure sees an employer lead board with broad representation of sectors, all passionate about shaping and recruiting youth talent. REGIONAL FOCUS: We are aware that employers recruit from outwith the City, approximately 40% of people in East Lothian and Midlothian travel in to Edinburgh for jobs. Having a regional focus allows us to look at the region as employers would, looking at the talent pipeline coming through education and creating links with industry that work for the regions labour market. Broadening pool of talent for employers. Allows for regional innovation.
