Title What is the title? What do I think this reading will be about? Do I already know something about this topic? Does the title express a point of view?

Heading What does this heading tell me I will read about? What is the topic of the paragraph beneath it? How can I turn this heading into a question that will be answered in the text?

INTRODUCTION Is there an opening paragraph? Is it in bold or italicized? Does it introduce the reading passage, story, or textbook chapter? What does it tell me I will be reading about?

Every First Sentence In a Paragraph What do I think this reading is going to be about based on the first sentence in each paragraph?

Visuals and Vocabulary Are there pictures? Graphs? Charts? What do the captions say? Is there a list of key vocabulary words? Are there important words in bold type?

End of Reading Questions What do the questions ask? Let me keep these questions in mind as I read, so that I can annotate my text.

Summary Is there a summary of the reading that I can view? What do I know already about this reading?
