St Bernadette KS1 Maths No Problem Parent Workshop Monday 29th April 2019
Aims of the Session. To introduce the Maths No Problem approach Aims of the Session *To introduce the Maths No Problem approach *To help parents to understand how Maths is taught at St Bernadette and what the expectations are *To show the methods and strategies used for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division across KS1
Addition
Add one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including zero Year 1 Add one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including zero
This is the ‘cherry’ method. It is a way to partition a number.
Add with 2-digit numbers Year 2 Add with 2-digit numbers
The ‘cherry’ method is used again here to partition into tens and ones.
Subtraction
Subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including zero Year 1 Subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including zero
Subtract with 2- digit numbers Year 2 Subtract with 2- digit numbers
Multiplication
Year 1 Solve one-step problems involving multiplication by calculating the answer using concrete objects, pictorial representations and arrays.
These are arrays. It is important to set it out clearly in rows so the children can interpret it correctly.
Year 2 Calculate mathematical statements and solve problems using the 2, 3, 5 & 10 multiplication tables.
Division
Year 1 Solve one-step problems involving division by calculating the answer using concrete objects, pictorial representations and arrays.
Year 2 Calculate mathematical statements and solve problems for division within the 2, 5 & 10 multiplication tables.
Link to the law of commutativity to show the relationship between multiplication and division.
What can parents do? Year 1 – Counting on and back Number bonds to 10 Year 1 – Counting on and back Number bonds to 10 Count in steps of 2, 5 and 10 Year 2 – Fast recall of 2, 3, 5, 10 x tables
