Writing Portfolio AP English Language, 2019 Due: 10 June 2019

Project Guidelines For his final major assignment, submit a portfolio of your writing, made up of 8-10 diverse selections representing various writing genres (3-4) and aspects of your writing. Include at least 6 pieces from this year. Consider including something you have written in another class and writings from previous years.

Genres with at least 2 selections When making your selections, consider distinct genres that reveal diverse areas of focus related to your writing: Rhetorical Analysis: SL notecards, SL Essay, Poe analysis paragraph, AP practice prompts (Thesis/outlines/paragraphs) & Gatsby Tracing Project Formal Papers/Synthesis: American Voices Essay, Crucible Thematic Concepts Essay, Transcendental/Anti-Trans. Persuasive Essay, Tapestry Essay, & Research Paper

More Genres… In-class Essays/Timed Writes: SL, Crucible, Douglass, Owls, Disobedience/Social Progress, AP Practice Exam w/ 3 essays Annotations: novels/play, stories, transcendental readings, Tapestry essays, poems, & speeches Creative work/personal reflections : Crucible Visual reflection/analysis, Poe room paragraph, Transcendental Graphic reflection/analysis. Process/Other: TKAM responses, rough drafts, outlines, and webs.

Purpose of Reflection Essay Create a compilation to achieve the following: reflect on what you have accomplished as a writer make discoveries & observations regarding your progress determine your strengths and weaknesses related to writing and thinking present, in a professional manner, the depth of your skills.

Selection of Evidence As you assemble your pieces, reflect on your progress as a writer and thinker, measuring your growth. You may include: Some “rough” pieces, with my comments or peer editors’ comments, along with the revised efforts Your best, “clean” pieces & final drafts with rubrics Or present a combination of approaches—it is up to you, as long as you presents a comprehensive view of your writing. (You do not need to type any handwritten pieces)

Reflection Essay (with an original title): An essay of personal assessment, approximately 4 pages in length (multi-paragraph essay expectations), in which you reflect on yourself as a writer and learner.   Write about your journey as a writer, considering what you have learned/discovered, what you have found most significant, how you have grown, and the challenges you’ve faced throughout this school year. Consider extended metaphors to explore your journey, discoveries, significant changes, growth, or challenges.

Reflection Essay (Evidence Selection) This is a personal essay that should be written in 1st person while still reflecting a mature prose style. Use at least 5 specific references (quotations from portfolio selections) as evidence that supports and clarifies your statements. Comment on at least one piece in each section (3-4 distinct genres). For example, if you have 2 essays in your Synthesis Genre Section, you do not need a specific quote from both of them. Choose the quote that best exemplifies growth.

Reflection Essay (Analysis) If you include an entire essay/response/paper, you do not need to comment on all of it. Focus on 1-2 aspects of writing for each selection: Introductions Conclusions Complex thesis statements/BTS Specific & convincing evidence Transitions/contextual lead-ins Linking devices to purpose Advancing an argument with persuasive analysis Inventive uses of language/mature prose style, and more!

Preface : In-class portfolio exchange – Tuesday, June 4th Preface written by a classmate to include in your portfolio: When your portfolio selections are ready to review next Tuesday, exchange them with a classmate . You will both take notes while reading the selections. Write down what you notice about the other person’s writing strengths and growth throughout the year. Choose at least 3 specific excerpts. You will each write a 1-2 page preface (300+ words) by next Friday so the other person can place it in his or her Portfolio. It will be the first document listed on the Table of Contents. Comment on your discoveries of his or her unique strengths and areas of growth, including at least 3 references to specific portfolio selections. Write an introduction, 1-2 body paragraphs, a conclusion, and your name/signature at the end of the preface. You may choose to exchange portfolios within a small group as long each person writes a preface and has a preface written for his/her portfolio.
