Nationalism in Europe Standard 7-3.6

Nationalism Nationalism is a feeling of love and loyalty for one’s nation (country). People who experience nationalism usually share common history, language, nationality, religion, and national boundary.

Why did Nationalism grow? Did you know that at the beginning of the 19th century (1800s) Italy, Germany and Greece did not exist? These countries were made up of small states that were independent but not strong. Many believed that each state should join to become stronger so that they would not be invaded by stronger, foreign countries.

More reasons… Economic (money) Stronger armies

The Role of Napoleonic Wars Napoleon Bonaparte's rise to power and his wars brought a great since of nationalism to Europe. He took over the many German states because they were small and not strong enough to fight against him. When this occurred, states joined together to unite nationalism and fight against him.

Unification of Italy 2 movements: 1. Camillo di Cavour- came from the island of Sardinia and took control of most of northern Italy in 1859. 2. Giuseppe Garibaldi- was working to unite southern Italy. In 1860, the two met in central Italy and joined the north and south together. This union created Italy.

Unification of Germany 1860s---the most important and powerful of the German states was called Prussia. Prussia’s leader was Wilhelm I and his Prime Minister was Otto von Bismarck. These two strong leaders convinced other small German states to join together. 1871---all German small states decided to join together to form Germany!

Greece Once was ruled or controlled by the Turks. Became independent during the late 1800s.
