Heading – Poetry 3 My body is a temple, a sacred holy place of worship. Spend two minutes writing your reaction to this statement.

Objective To examine the poet, William Wordsworth, a bit further. To examine another of his poems. This one has religious imagery and shall make the other work clearer as well.

William Wordsworth His parents died when he was very young. This forced him to examine the world and nature at an early age. As a young man, Wordsworth fell in love with a woman in France and had a child named Caroline. He was separated from this child during the French revolution however. It was 10 years until he met his daughter. (Can you imagine how he felt meeting his ten year old daughter for the first time?)

This next poem, he wrote for Caroline. Hopefully this video works 

"IT IS A BEAUTEOUS EVENING, CALM AND FREE" By William Wordsworth The holy time is quiet as a Nun Breathless with adoration; the broad sun Is sinking down in its tranquillity; The gentleness of heaven broods o'er the Sea: Listen! the mighty Being is awake, And doth with his eternal motion make A sound like thunder--everlastingly. Dear Child! dear Girl! that walkest with me here, If thou appear untouched by solemn thought, Thy nature is not therefore less divine: Thou liest in Abraham's bosom all the year; And worship'st at the Temple's inner shrine, God being with thee when we know it not.

“IT is a beauteous evening, calm and free, The holy time is quiet as a Nun Breathless with adoration;” (write me down) Wordsworth worshipped sunsets. Examine every word and write down why you think Wordsworth loved Sunsets.

Is sinking down in its tranquility; ; the broad sun Is sinking down in its tranquility; The gentleness of heaven broods o'er the Sea: As the sun goes down nice and peacefully, heaven broods (nests or rests) on the sea. Through nature, we can see glimpses of something bigger than ourselves, answers that all humans desire.

Close your eyes What do you hear?

Listen! the mighty Being is awake, And doth with his eternal motion make A sound like thunder--everlastingly. The force of nature at work reminds the poet of God. He is also addressing someone – “Listen”.

Dear Child! dear Girl! that walkest with me here, If thou appear untouched by solemn thought, Thy nature is not therefore less divine: Write down what you think he is telling his daughter here. Solemn – serious and dignified. Nature – who they are. Divine – holy or religious

whether she knows it or not. She is naturally pure and connected She is part of nature, whether she knows it or not. She is naturally pure and connected to God. She is Daddy’s ‘little angel’. Thou liest in Abraham's bosom all the year; And worship'st at the Temple's inner shrine, God being with thee when we know it not.
