Let’s do sightseeing

London London is the capital of Great Britain. It is on the river Thames. London is divided into three parts: West End, East End and the City (many historical monuments situated there).

London Eye is the largest observation wheel in the world and it is very popular with tourists. Visitors to London often prefer to travel by bus because they can see much of the city from the top of a double-decker.

Oxford Street is one of London’s most popular shopping streets, especially known for its department stores and varied clothing shops.

Piccadilly Circus is a square in the central part of London Piccadilly Circus is a square in the central part of London. Best-known theatres and cinemas and most famous restaurants are on Piccadilly Circus. Here you can see people of many nationalities and hear a lot of different languages.

Trafalgar Square Trafalgar Square is in the centre of the West End of London. Trafalgar Square is the place where mass meeting and demonstrations for peace and for working people’s rights take place.

In the centre of the Trafalgar Square there is a big column In the centre of the Trafalgar Square there is a big column. At the top of the column there is a statue of Admiral Nelson who had to fight the French at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

The Tower of London is the most famous of all the historical buildings in London. In the past the Tower of London served both as a palace and as a state prison, but it is a museum today. Tower Bridge is a very popular bridge, built in Victorian style (1894).

Big Ben is the name of the great bell which strikes the hour Big Ben is the name of the great bell which strikes the hour. It is in the Clock Tower of the Houses of Parliament. The House of Parliament is the place where members of Parliament gather to make laws. It stands on the riverside near Westminster Abbey.

Buckingham Palace is the official home of the British royal family

The Queen Elizabeth 2 is a queen from 1952. She has a right to name the Prime Minister and to open the session of parliament.

Madame Tussaud’s museum It is a famous waxworks museum in London, opened in 1835 by Marie Tussaud(1760 - 1850). The museum contains wax figures of famous and notorious characters in both history and contemporary life.

The British Museum The building in London containing Britain’s most important collection of ancient art, writings, coins, drawings. It is also holds the main collection and the reading room of the Reference Division of the British Library.

The Natural History Museum At this museum you can learn about the history of plants, animals and minerals.

The Sherlock Holmes Museum The house of Sherlock Holmes is on the 221b Baker Street. Now it is a museum.

Victoria Station Victoria Station is a big, old, famous station in London. It is named after Victoria, a famous English queen.
