PRACTICAL NURSING DIPLOMA Qualification Process Updated 7/2017

What is a Licensed practical nurse? Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) care for the sick and injured and help people stay well. They provide basic medical and nursing care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN)

Typical LPN Duties Administering and delivering medications and treatments Perming basic nursing tasks Implementing basic nursing interventions Assisting in the evaluation of responses to interventions Performing clinical nursing procedures Communicating with patients and their families

Steps of Enrollment Complete and submit a York Technical College application Take the placement test or submit SAT/ACT scores Meet with your advisor Meet the waiting list requirements (next slide) Pay the $50.00 wait list fee once you have met the criteria Maintain required GPA Pay the $100.00 deposit when seat is available

Students qualifying for the PN Program waiting list must meet the following criteria: High school diploma or GED 2.0 PN Program GPA TEAS score of “Proficient” or higher Completion of one of the following methods of qualifications: ACCUPLACER minimum scores SAT/ACT minimum scores “C” or better in RDG 101 and MAT 033 and ENG 032

Waiting List Information The Academic & Career Advising Center maintains the LPN waiting list Currently, the wait to start nursing courses is approximately 1 year once student qualifies for and places name on the list Classes are held at the Chester Center for all students; clinicals are held in Chester, Lancaster and York counties Students are admitted in the order name was placed on list, according to the date & time Once your name is on the waiting list, your continued eligibility will be evaluated each semester

While you are waiting… Complete all general education courses for the PN Diploma Complete the general education courses for the ADN program if this is a goal for you Pursue other opportunities in the healthcare field if you wish (these are not requirements) Medical Assisting Certificate (37 credit hrs) CNA Training (AHS 117 or Con Ed) Phlebotomy Training (AHS 144 or Con Ed)

Lpn-to-adn transition Students interested in transitioning into the ADN (RN) program upon completion of the PN Diploma must meet additional qualification criteria for the ADN program. Articulation into the ADN program is neither automatic nor is it guaranteed. See the most current YTC Catalog & Handbook for details.

Things to Consider This program takes 12 months to complete once you begin taking nursing courses The curriculum is rigorous; it requires extensive reading, dedicated study time and good time management skills Annual program admissions each Fall semester Between coursework and clinical rotations, successful students should plan to devote approximately 40 hours per week each semester to their nursing studies The program’s complex schedule can make it challenging to e employed full-time while enrolled

The clinical experience Clinical rotations are required each semester Students may be assigned to morning, afternoon or evening clinical anywhere in the tri-county area Clinical experiences may range from 8-12 hours per clinical day Clinical expectations include sitting, standing, walking, frequent bending, squatting, reaching, occasional kneeling, twisting, and exposure to changes in temperature/humidity and fumes
