Outline for Presentation Method used to set up our courses up as it pertains to course goals and objectives Lessons learned during Spring 2018/2019 Next steps for future, based on our experience teaching corequisites this year

Before the Semester Met to discuss major assignments and essays for English 1301 and lessons for INRW 0315 Discussed course objectives for both courses Had a general discussion on how the INRW class would support (scaffold) for English 1301

Before the Semester (continued) Agreed INRW had to remain a real course with its own lessons, assignments and objectives Discussed the timing of those lessons to complement what was being done in English 1301 Agreed the English 1301 assignment standards should remain in place

Assignments In the following slides we will give examples of assignments for English 1301 and the corresponding assignment in INRW 0315

Example #1 English 1301 SLO: INRW SLO: English Assignment: Read, reflect, and respond critically to a variety of texts INRW SLO: Located explicit textual information, draw complex inferences…. Comprehend and use vocabulary effectively English Assignment: Students will read two chapters from their English textbook and an online essay INRW Assignments: Students learned how to annotate and summarize in INRW They annotated one of the English chapters, and wrote a summary on the second In addition, they added any new vocabulary to the vocabulary section of their INRW portfolio

Example #2 English 1301 SLO: English Assignment: INRW Assignments: Write in a style appropriate to audience and purpose Use Edited American English in academic essays INRW 0315 SLO: Determine and use effective approaches and rhetorical strategies for given reading and writing situations English Assignment: Students will write a literacy narrative essay INRW Assignments: Students learned about the steps in the writing process and different prewriting techniques Students completed a timeline prewriting exercise for their literacy narrative

Example #3 English 1301 SLO: INRW 0315 SLO: English Assignment: Develop ideas with appropriate support and attribution INRW 0315 SLO: Identify and analyze the audience, purpose, and message across a variety of texts Recognize and apply the conventions of standard English…. English Assignment: Students will write an argument essay using secondary sources as evidence INRW Assignments: Lessons on differentiating between facts and opinions; differentiating between authors’ purposes and tones, and how this applies when searching for sources and writing their essays Lessons on how to identify and correct run on sentences and sentence fragments

Lessons Learned Focus needs to be on what best helps students improve their reading, writing, and communication skills It is important to have a positive attitude and be open to new ideas and be flexible Demonstrate respect for your partner Only assist students on assignments you have assigned

Our Next Steps for Fall 2019 Create companion pre-writing assignments that connect English essay assignments to the SLOs for INRW. Teach one traditional pairing together.  Implement a hybrid co-requisite pairing together.

Possible Assignments for INRW 0315 Reading Comprehension Outline, summarize, or annotate a reading for the paired class Work in groups to fill out a graphic organizer for a section in a chapter that is crucial Create note cards or add vocabulary to their notebook section for all vocabulary terms for paired class Jigsaw- Students can be placed in groups—each group is responsible for presenting a chapter for an upcoming test in the paired class through a PowerPoint presentation and creating a study guide to give to all students
