The USA enters World War 2! Key Terms Why Pearl Harbor? -Versailles (again) -Japan lacks resources -Racial attitudes -Japan vs. China -Japan’s Military Government -US Reaction -A Big Decision

Japan at Versailles -Snubbed, treated As inferior by the European and American Representatives -Declaration on racial Equality voted down

Japan Lacks Resources As an Island, Japan always Needed things from other countries. As the population grew they Also needed food supplies In Modern times, They needed OIL and gas, for Modern factories And military Equipment.

Japanese Racial Attitudes For a long Time, the Japanese had Seen themselves As superior to Other Asians. They were Sometimes Called by Europeans “The White Men of Asia.”

JAPAN vs CHINA! Japan wanted natural Resources and territory And China was the perfect Target. Big, but not a very modern Military. And the Japanese Saw the Chinese as Racially inferior Japan fought two wars With China, the first in 1931 and the second Started in 1937.

Japan’s Military Government When the depression hit, Japan turned to a military Government. General Hideki Tojo took Charge. Japan joined the Axis Along with Germany And Japan.

US Reaction against Japan As Japanese aggression increased, The US demanded that Japan Pull back from other Asian countries. We were worried about our own Access to Asian resources, and about Japan threatening us in the Pacific. They refused to stop what they Were doing, so we increased aid to China and cut off oil shipments. FDR

Japan’s BIG Decision They could not fight wars or Maintain a modern economy Without oil. They knew at this Point they were going to Have to fight America…. But the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor was a big threat To their plans with Battleships And Aircraft Carriers

Internal Debate on War…. Some Japanese leaders felt That their only chance was A quick sneak attack and To win the war fast. It had worked on Russia in 1905. Their top admiral, Admiral Yamamoto, was against the Plan, and compared America To a dragon. Admiral Yamamoto

To War! Banzai! The Japanese Fleet left Japan On November 26 with six Aircraft Carriers. The goal would be to Destroy or damage as much Of the US Navy as they could With a surprise attack!

Pearl Harbor Attacked with 343 Airplanes at 7:40 on a Sunday morning. Knew Americans would be sleeping in Or at church. One radar operator had Detected The planes coming, but was told They were our planes on a test run.

Pearl Harbor All 8 Battleships damaged, 3 cruisers sunk, 188 Planes lost 2400 Americans killed Facilities heavily damaged One stroke of luck, our Aircraft Carriers, the most Important part of a modern Navy, were at sea training That day and received no Damage.

“A day that will live in Infamy” Congress Declares war The next day, Dec 8th. Roosevelt’s famous Quote: “A Day that Will live in infamy.” Germany and Italy declare war On U.S. three days Later.

Japan Storms the Pacific After Pearl Harbor, the Japanese Swarmed across the Pacific, Pushing American forces back. Remember, we had been isolationist Before the war, so in many ways We were not ready. The Japanese even drove Us out of our colony in the Philippines
