BOOTCAMP SOCIAL INNOVATION ACCELERATOR TO CREATE LASTING CHANGE POWERED BY SANTANDER TO CREATE LASTING CHANGE

WHO YOU NEED ON YOUR TEAM

Director, Innovation, United Way of Metropolitan Dallas Kate Knight Director, Innovation, United Way of Metropolitan Dallas

OVERVIEW OF TOPICS AND OBJECTIVES How to think about building your team Skills vs “Types” People you need on your startup team Managing Your Team Objectives Take stock of your existing team Consider which roles you need to fill and in what order you might fill them

THINKING ABOUT YOUR TEAM Think back to orientation. We touched a little bit on the need for diverse teams for success. Think about your team like a stew. You need a lot of different ingredients; people with different experiences and skillsets (and, frankly, weaknesses) that complement one another nicely. Boiling Stew by Ben Davis from the Noun Project

YOUR FIRST 5 HIRES ARE CRITICAL “Having the right team determines the path and outcome of a new venture more than any decision in the lifecycle of a company,”  These are the people whom you’re going to want around for a long time, whom you’re going to trust with significant assignments, and whom you’ll need to call upon and rely on in times of great need. team by b farias from the Noun Project

SKILLS TYPES Accounting Visionary Advertising Leader Finance Manufacturing Marketing Planning Product Design Publicity Sales Supervising Web Design Visionary Leader Workhorse Taskmaster Connector Industry Vet Cheerleader People on your team can fit into multiple types.

VISIONARY Genius Diva Passionate Inspiring Creative Genius, Diva, challenges team, asks for things others aren’t sure how they will deliver, passionate, high-risk, sees a need, inspiration, excitement, drive, pinpoints problems and imagines solutions ambitious by AdbA Icons ❤️ from the Noun Project

LEADER Trustworthy Makes Hard Decisions Commands Respect People Will Follow

WORKHORSE Doer Technical Skill Rolls Up Sleeves Can-Do Attitude Can make ideas REAL, expertise & diligence to move a project from start to finish, technical skills, rolls up his sleeves, gets down to business and accomplishes tasks craftsman by Bureau Briganti from the Noun Project

Detail oriented – operationalizes the ideas of the visionary, creates systems and makes sure everyone knows their role. Impatient, deadline driven, fast paced, holds feet to the fire, keeps people accountable. Productivity by Gregor Cresnar from the Noun Project

CONNECTOR Relationships Network Culture Community Fosters a network of contacts and connections. Relationship builder with customers, investors, donors, advisors. Can set the tone for the organization – externally, but also internally. Can build community within the team. connect by AlfredoCreates.com/icons & Flaticondesign.com from the Noun Project

Competitive Advantage INDUSTRY VET Domain Knowledge Savvy Competitive Advantage Knows how things are done in a particular sector/industry. Knows subtleties of the competitive landscape, Leader and industry vet are often the same person.

CHEERLEADER Optimistic Encouraging Morale Energetic Culture This person keeps the team moving when challenges appear. They are the optimist and motivational. Cheerleader by Marie Coons from the Noun Project

MANAGING YOUR TEAM Now things can get quite complicated -- sometimes pretty quickly. You don’t necessarily want that hard-driving person to interface directly with your technical person. You might want to use the process-oriented individual as a buffer. On the other hand, maybe the person with the technical skills needs a kick in the butt. This is more art than craft. It takes a great deal of judgment on the part of the entrepreneur on how to arrange the people on the team -- or in the stew. The point is that you are trying to offset skills and personalities, and that is tremendously important, especially in the beginning.  mixing board by Nick Dominguez from the Noun Project

WHO’S ON YOUR TEAM?

CLOSING Ultimately when it comes to a social impact business you need people that have a heart for the work you are doing. It will take everyone working in perfect harmony to make
