Kirsten Ross Head of Faculty Carlton le Willows Academy Key Stage 3 Assessment Kirsten Ross Head of Faculty Carlton le Willows Academy

With the changes to the MFL curricula at all Key Stages, Key Stage 3 should be our focus. Students must become ‘used to’ the new assessment style so they are ready for the challenges it brings, especially at GCSE. Understandably, Ofsted wants to see more focus on KS3 in its new inspection framework. Robust and reliable assessment at KS3 is crucial for success at both KS4 and KS5.

where are you now & Where do you want to be? 4 mins Think about & discuss what you already do in KS3 assessments. What works well? What would you like your KS3 assessments to look like?

KS3 GCSE Instead of working towards GCSE, we should be working backwards. What’s expected at GCSE and how can we get students ready?

What’s expected at GCSE? Listening Speaking Reading Writing Sneaky tricks Interpretation Concentration Common sense Spontaneity Interpretation Memory Common sense Sneaky tricks Interpretation Translation Common sense Translation Interpretation Memory Common sense The skills required in the four skill areas at GCSE. What are they? Discuss. What comes up a lot?

out-of-class assessment In-class assessment out-of-class assessment STAC (strengths, targets for improvement, action taken) Peer Listening Reading End-of-year = listening, reading, writing What we do at CLW STAC assessments tend to be written or translation tasks (extended tasks). Peer assessments are usually speaking tasks. Every half term, students are tested on either listening or reading (not ideal, but it takes up a lot of time). At the end of the year, more skill areas are tested in a bigger assessment.
