INTELLIGENT BROWSERS Cenk Ursavas

Browsers Software application that resides on a computer and is used to locate and display Web pages There many browsers out there All have different features IE, Netscape, Mozilla, Opera, Mosaic are the most known Do they support Java, frames, CSS, XML, cookies

Isn’t one browser enough? IE and Netscape are both excellent browsers There are many browsers coming up all the time They try to become more intelligent

How does a browser become intelligent? Being able to work off-line Downloads web site content to your hard drive. These files are stored on your hard drive and can be viewed later without having to access the Internet, Additional options allow you to restrict the amount of time and disk space used to save a site (pictures?), fill offline forms. Save money on internet. Leech 3.0.1(1.886MB) ($29.95) , WebZIP 2.75, ecatch

Software Attached to web browsers Make surfing easier(create automatic links with in the page) Automatic searching Multi leeching Personalization of the browser

Fast surfing InterQuick 2.0 brings intelligence to Web browsing by giving fast access to desired web site. By blocking the content we don’t need (banner ads) Ad Close 1.7 closes the annoying pop-up browser windows (words from our sponsor) Lightspeed Surfer blocks annoyances and speeds up web surfing by downloading only some images and replacing the rest with text and links according to your preference. Ideal for people who use the web for research

Related links Flyswat creates live links on the web page you are visiting. So related information is there. Esgear is a browsing companion consists of several internet utilities, as you are visiting a web site esgear detects your location and shows links if related web site is there. Works like Barnes & Noble

Many browsers with filtering, caching features NetSonic speeds up the web browsing by loading previously visited web pages to the screen. The changes are highlighted. Adult content filters are very common

What else Download accelerator, recover from lost connections and computer shutdowns Disconnector: Disconnect when finished downloading Rename: URL renaming Small browsers that can be run from a floppy.

Copernic A software agent that helps you do better searching. Search updates for results to certain queries and if it finds one, it sends e-mail notifications. Look for changes in certain web pages and notify if there is a change.

Proxy servers They sit between browsers and external servers They work well with the browsers Muffin: a http proxy server Written in java, graphical user interface Restrict access to some web sites Disable cookies, ads, images The code is there, you can even write your own classes

Muffin I wrote a class, the URLs are written into a database which resides on a server. So you can create your own favorites folder. Using the database you can create many of the features that the intelligent browsers offer

Muffin

Examples Filtering : Parse the html code before displaying the page and look for keywords. Create your own web search engine using the database you have created. You can even display the cached version of the web pages from the database. And even create a image database. Similar to flyswat create live links as you are visiting a web site.

What are the advantages and disadvantages? Good for some people and for some does not matter. Maybe some features are helpful but they might slow down the connection sometimes. Most of them are not free. Programmers can write their own programs, Are some of the soft wares that intelligent?

Cost Is it worth paying for the cost? 30-35 $ Maybe

Improvements? I would like to add all the features to the muffin; search engine, off-line browsing, automatic translation, if a web page is removed then go to google and get the cached version automatically. Use google to create links in the web browser when working off-line, on-line

Improvements Only insert links that are ranked high in google. Download the web pages that the links point to.
