Planning for College and Career?

How to decide what is the best career for you! Ask yourself these questions…. What do I like to do for fun? What do I like to read about? Who is the one person that I admire the most? What class inspires me the most? What are my strengths and weaknesses? Where do I want to live? What was the one career that I talked about as a child?

Don’t be afraid to think outside of the ! Connect what you are good at and passionate about, to the jobs that are out there, not the other way around! Example: You like the idea of working in the health field with children? Nursing is a great way to do it, but so is respiratory therapy, speech language pathology, physical therapist assistant, and the list goes on and on. Which career is best for you?

Career and Technical School? These specialty schools offer a variety of programs to get the student in the workforce and often starting at $10,000-$20,000 more than a high school graduate with up to a years worth of training in a specific field. Example: Licensed Practical Nurse, EMT, Paramedic, Dental Assistant, Massage Therapy, Pharmacy Technician, Cosmetology, Welding, Electrician, HVAC & Automotive.

State Colleges: A.A. or A.S.? Associate in Arts degrees (A.A.) are meant for transfer, particularly to State Universities, Associate in Science (A.S.) degrees are meant to start work after earning your two year degree in a specific program. Examples: Business, Criminal Justice, Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, or Radiology. There are many others too!

What about University? AA degree earned at a state college is a university transfer degree begin at the university as a Junior. Typically 4 years of education to earn a Bachelors degree. Or continue 2-4+ years to get a Master’s or PhD degree for higher learning skills needed for many jobs/careers. Example: Guidance Counselor, Physician, or Nurse Practitioner.
