Agenda 08/16/2018 Ticket in the Door D.E.A.R.!!! Unit 1 : Operations with Rational numbers Vocabulary Quiz Adding and Subtracting integers Review D.E.A.R.!!!

Good Luck!!!!!! Vocabulary Terms Negative Numbers Additive Inverse Natural Numbers Repeating Decimal Multiplicative Inverse Absolute Value Integers Long Division Opposite Numbers Rational Numbers Terminating Decimal Zero Pair Positive Numbers

Adding and Subtracting Rational Numbers 2-2 Objective: Students will add and subtract integers and rational numbers.

Addition of Rational Numbers Same sign – add their absolute values. The sign for the answer will be the same as the addends. Example: -11 + (-7) = - 18

Addition of Rational Numbers Different signs – subtract the lesser absolute value from the greater absolute value. The sum has the value of the greater absolute value. Example: 8 + (-9) = -1

Guided Practice

Add 8 + (-5) = 3 2. -1 + (-4) = -5 3. -6 + 14 = 8

Subtraction of Rational Numbers Add its additive inverse: Take the sign of the largest number. Example: 8 – 15 = 8 + (-15) = -7

Subtraction -19 – 8 = -19 + (-8) = -27 2. 16 – (-23) = 16 + +23 = 39 3. – 9 – 6 = -9 + (-6) = -15
