EOG Vocabulary 2015- 2016 By: M. MANLEY

PLOT The plan, scheme, or main story of a literary or dramatic work, as a play, novel or short story; storyline.

SPEAKER Somebody who makes a speech or gives a lecture

PROBABLY As is likely or to be expected

AUTHOR Somebody who writes a book or other text such as a literary work or a report

DIFFERENT Not the same as something or somebody else

PHRASE a string of words that form a grammatical unit, usually within a clause or sentence

SIMILAR Sharing some qualities, but not identical

IMPORTANT Worthy of note or consideration, especially for its interest, value, or relevance

FREQUENTLY On many occasions with little time between them

CONCLUSION A decision made or an opinion formed after considering the relevant facts or evidence.

SUMMARY A shortened version of something that has been said or written, containing only the main points

MAINLY To a large extent or in most cases MAINLY CLOUDY

BASED ON The main principle or starting point of a system or theory

INGREDIENT A component of a mixture, especially an item of food or flavoring included in the recipe for preparing a dish

STATEMENT The expression in spoken or written words of something such as a fact, intention, or policy, or an instance of this

LITERARY DEVICE A technique a writer uses to produce a special effect in their writing.

PROBLEM-SOLUTION Problem-A difficulty that has to be resolved or dealt with. Solution-An act, plan or other means, used or proposed, to solve a problem

SEQUENCE To arrange in an order.

CONCEPT An understanding retained in the mind, from experience; a general idea.

VARIETY A number or collection of different things especially of a particular class; assortment

EVIDENCE Facts or observations presented in support of an idea.

NARRATOR Someone who tells a story

UNIQUE Being the only one of its kind.

ACCURATE Freedom from mistakes.

EXAGGERATION to state that something is better, worse, larger, more common, or more important than is true or usual

CLOSURE A conclusion or end.

CONTRAST To show how people or things are different.

COMBINE To bring (two or more things or activities) together; to unite

TECHNIQUE A procedure or method for doing a task.

IDIOM A speech form or an expression of a given language that is peculiar to itself grammatically or cannot be understood from the literal meaning.

Onomatopoeia The use of words whose sound suggests the sense

Figurative Language To describe something by comparing it with something else without using the literal meaning

CORRELATE Have a mutual relationship or connection, in which one thing affects or depends on another.

NUMEROUS Great in number; many.

SCURRY Move hurriedly with short quick steps; hurry

COLLIDE To strike one another or one against the other with a forceful impact; crash

DEBUT To formally introduce to the public

EXPOSE To cause to be visible or open to view; display or uncover

ARRANGE To set up, to organize, especially in a positive manner

GULLIBLE tending to trust and believe people, and therefore easily tricked or deceived

FACTOR something that contributes to or has an influence on the outcome of something

CAMPAIGN series of events, e.g. rallies and speeches, that are intended to persuade voters to vote for a specific politician or party

NEGOTIATE to attempt to come to an agreement on something through discussion and compromise

CLASSIFY to assign things or people to categories

DEVASTATION To ruin many or all things over a large area, such as most or all buildings of a city, or cities of a region, or trees of a forest.

RESOURCEFUL Using materials at hand wisely or efficiently.
