Do Now pg. 5, left side What do you know about slavery?

Vocab Indenture: A work contract that specifies an amount of time in exchange for something

The “Need” for Slavery Colonies’ purpose is to make as much money as possible. To maximize profits, need a source of cheap or free labor Large workforce being imported, seemingly endless supply of workers Cheaper than indentured servants

Slavery as we know it West, and later Central Africans kidnapped or sold into slavery by stronger tribes Also Native Americans captured in battles Lasted longest in the Southern US, but was used all over the colonies

Slavery as We Know It All slaves were brought here by force Had no choice in their work or the length of their work, where, etc. Worked until death or freed (rare)

Indentured Servants What is an indentured servant? How long was an indenture? What were they promised after they finished their term of service? What is the name for this? Why did people become indentured servants? What is the landowner responsible for?
