Who was the patron of this work? Does it matter that Jean Duc de Berry—the brother of King Charles V (reigned 1364-1380)—crippled his subjects with the highest taxes in France? Does this view of society—that the land and the peasants exist to produce wealth for their lord—affect the way that both the landscape and the peasans are presented by the Limbourg brothers? By reading these images, what further arguments can the viewer make about what the Duc de Berry values?
