How did you attract your audience? Evaluation Question 5 How did you attract your audience?

Target Audience Marketing tools We have quit a wide age target audience, from 18-40 years old, as our narrative fits in with these ages and its also mainstream so therefore will appear to a larger audience. Due to this age range I have to consider many ways of marketing our film in a way that we can reach all ages. For example the younger side of the audience for 18-30 we will likely interact with them through media where as the age group 30-40 we will reach them more through posters, billboards etc. Marketing tools A way to appeal to the audience through marketing is to include the film in recognisable events. Such as interviews with the actors, perhaps at a film event to promote our up and coming film. This is an effective way to appeal to our target audience as the aim would be to show the interviews on TV, which is a recognisable marketing technique when appealing to our age audience and when releasing a mainstream film, for example an interview at the ‘Golden Globe’ awards. We could also include aspects of media coverage through popular film festivals as a mixture of ages ranging from 18- 30 usually attend.

One way to reach our target audience through marketing would be through pull advertising, this is to attract the ages 18-35 year olds. We would use interactive marketing such as social media like twitter to gain a large group of followers and so that people could share things about the film with friends. This is due to the fact anyone/everyone can share things online, so social media is an extremely used tool for my target audience of 18-35 year olds in their daily lives. In addition, people can share things worldwide using social network, which is the aim of our film; to be recognised globally, rather than in one particular location like the UK. Viral marketing campaigns is also another way to promote the film, we would create a unique campaign in order to catch the audiences attention; get the public talking about the film, sharing comments via word of mouth. Marketing tools Push advertising is another way to reach the films target audience, this will specifically appeal to the older half of my audience, 30- 40. I would include marketing forms such as billboards and posters on the sides of buildings and bus stops in popular, busy locations, which will enable people to see aspects of the film in daily life, also the fact our film is mainstream means we have the budget to do so. During the marketing stage I would also release a trailer- a TV advert which is an effective way to gain publicity, reaching both age groups of the target audience.

Marketing tools- attracting audience to specific film The actors of the film aren’t recognisable; there up and coming actors, however we have included characters and actors that are similar to those in successful, popular films. For example the film ‘Salt’ was a popular film that included the skilful assassin played by Angelina Jolie we have a character that is similar who is also an assassin and has a similar dangerous background with a similar costume- we have replicated the sophisticated all black with sleek hair which people seemed to praise in the film ‘Salt’ Unique selling points Our unique selling points would be shown through our posters and TV ads. In the TV add we would use a phrase like the following- ‘From the makers of The Wolf Of Wall Street and Shutter Island, Paramount pictures presents to you Intruder’ ‘The groundbreaking film, with mind-blowing twists and an ending that is sure to amaze you’ As films will be mentioned that are extremely popular ‘The Wolf Of Wall Street’, the audience will likely assume this new film will be just as impressive and the fact that the film is distributed by a recognisable, respectable company will appeal to the target audience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B65XiXJ-ASk -Shutter Island TV ad

Audience Feedback Genre We showed our opening title sequence to our target audience to get feedback on different aspects of our film. This should imply what our target audience enjoyed about our film and what aspects appealed to them most. Overall, I’d say our OTS has successfully reached our target audience as, as we received many positive comments from our aimed audience and have managed to appeal to them through our conventions which connotes a mysterious feel to the film and dramatic, climatic twists which is bound to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. Genre In terms of genre, our audience commented on many conventions that made it a thriller. Many commented on the fact the narrative as a whole fits the genre because of the subtle hints, tension and mystery. One person said, “The enigma! Why was she killed? What happens next?” Particularly when the character is on the phone and says ‘the job is done’, as it creates a high level of suspense and creates many questions. Also the fact the characters are typical thriller characters of the protagonist being an ordinary person and the antagonist often related to violence and crime.

Mise-En-Scene The main comment we had on Mise-en-scene was the effective costume, of the makeup looking very realistic and well done, also the fact their was a specific costume for each character. Another affective piece of Mise-en-scene that was mentioned by our target audience was the props, the knife and the photos which gave an eerie feel to the sequence and the phone as it hinted to the background of the antagonist. Further comments were the lighting conformed a good mysterious tone. A member of the audience quoted, “The location reminds me of settings from other thrillers” as it was quit an ordinary location- on the street and in the home. Overall, I’d say our OTS has successfully reached our target audience as, as we received many positive comments from our aimed audience and have managed to appeal to them through our conventions which connotes a mysterious feel to the film and dramatic, climatic twists which is bound to keep the audience on the edge of their seats.

Technical aspects A popular comment we received was the sound effects were very good, as they were used at appropriate times and blended well with the main layer of sound, building up a lot of tension as the SFX are heard when the antagonist is on screen. Further comments on the soundtrack included ‘it was thrilling and chilling with mystical aspects’ The main comment we received on technical aspects was the titles they were a main aspect the audience found effective, the use of placement in negative space and how they appear and leave- they work well with the sequence. One comment was ‘the title fonts were clear and I loved the main title especially.’ Camerawork was described to be impressive with a variety of shots and good use of editing on the pull focus shot, and the editing wasn’t over used which fits well with the genre. In addition the audience commented the de-saturation made the sequence look like a typical thriller film and created a mysterious cold mood.
