Health IT Certificate Series

Why Health IT? Health information technology (health IT) makes it possible for health care providers to better manage patient care through s ecure use and sharing of health information. Health IT includes the use of electronic health records (EHRs) instead of paper medical records to maintain people's health information. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act - office of the National Coordinator, Healthcare & Human Services coordinates this nationwide effort. Migration to Electronic Medical Records (EMR) Mandatory – Federal Mandate

Health IT Certificate Series Health Informatics – Combines healthcare, information technology and business administration. – Focuses on implementation and optimization of the information systems that support a clinical practice.

Health IT Certificate Series Bureau of Labor Statistics – Shortfall of Health IT workers through 2015 and beyond – Occupational outlook expected to increase faster than average through 2018 – Health IT workers will be in great demand as hospitals, physician offices and other health providers move to electronic medical records

What is the driving force behind Health IT? The Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs provide a financial incentive for the "meaningful use" of certified EHR technology to achieve health and efficiency goals. *By putting into action and meaningfully using an EHR system, providers will reap benefits beyond financial incentives–such as reduction in errors, availability of records and data, reminders and alerts clinical decision support, and e-prescribing/refill automation. * Source: Office of the National Coordinator, Healthcare & Human Services

What is "Meaningful Use"? The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 specifies three main components of Meaningful Use: The use of a certified EHR in a meaningful manner, such as e-prescribing. The use of certified EHR technology for electronic exchange of health information to improve quality of health care. The use of certified EHR technology to submit clinical quality and other measures. Meaningful use" means providers need to show they're using certified EHR technology in ways that can be measured significantly in quality and in quantity.

Top Ten Health IT Tech trends* Preparing to create accountable care organizations, developing medical home models, expanding health information exchanges, moving forward to resolve core data infrastructure issues integrating inpatient and outpatient (especially physician office-based) information systems, making clinicians fully mobile, leveraging the intelligence in clinical IS, locking down data security and privacy, supporting continuous performance improvement, and engaging patients and families-all of these are areas of activity that need to be addressed. *Source Healthcare Informatics Magazine
