TOPIC NO. 1 Social Psychology Social Cognition: Understanding People I determine how I affect people I determine how people effect me Social Influence: How people influence each other I perceive how people effect each other I assess social norms We are much more easygoing on ourselves (situation) than we are on others (inherent)

Understanding Others Person perception An individual’s personal motivations are most important in one’s perception of others I have my opinions, my goals, my own understanding of the world, and my self-esteem that I reference to understand others’ behaviors

Understanding Others Social Categorization I want to understand my world fast It is cognitively efficient of me to put people into categories so that I might understand them fast Remember representative and availability heuristics? That guy Jim is wearing a baseball hat, so I bet he plays on a sports team.

Attributions: What are the causes of human behavior? Implicit Personality People have traits and temperaments I understand people based on indicators of their behavior that imply their personality Smart people are skinny geeks who wear glasses. Presidents cheat on their wives.

Attributions: What are the causes of human behavior? Fundamental Attribution Error (Heider) We attribute others’ behaviors to dispositions Homeless people are lazy. Self-serving bias We attribute our behaviors to situations I’m homeless because my boss fired me, but if I work hard, I won’t be homeless.
