Knowing God (5): The Godhead Jesus, is He God? John 17:3

The Godhead “Paul is declaring that in the Son there dwells all the fullness of the absolute Godhead; they were no mere rays of Divine glory which gilded Him, lighting up His Person for a season and with a splendour not His own; but He was, and is, absolute and perfect God; and the Apostle uses theotes to express this essential and personal Godhead of the Son” —Vine “In Rom. 1:20 the Apostle is declaring how much of God may be known from the revelation of Himself which He has made in nature, from those vestiges of Himself which men may everywhere trace in the world around them. Yet it is not the personal God whom any man may learn to know by these aids; He can be known only by revelation of Himself in His Son;” —Vine “Godhead” occurs five times in NT: Acts 17:29; Rom. 1:20; Col. 2:9; 2 Pet. 1:3 & 4 Acts 17:29; 2 Peter 1:3, 4 from Greek theios : “to denote ‘the Godhead,’ the Deity (i.e., the one true God). Romans 1:20 from Greek theiotes : divinity (Vine) Colossians 2:9 from Greek theiotes : Vine Jesus, Is He God?

The Godhead KEY: “Godhead” = “Godhood”: The state, cond-ition, or quality of being God or Divine. Manhood: the qualities which makes a man a man. Childhood: the qualities which makes a child a child. Brotherhood: the qualities which makes a person a brother (physically or spiritually). Thus, there are three distinct personalities in the “Godhead” ; three beings possessing the essence of “Godhood,” the “Divine nature.” Jesus, Is He God?

Pre-incarnate Son: (1) Eternal existence: “the Word…was in the beginning with God” : Jn. 1:1-4; 17:5; 1:14; Matt. 1:23 (2) Distinct personality: “the word was with God” : Jn. 1:1; 17:5 (3) Divine personality: “and the word was God” (Jn. 1:1).

Godhead (1) God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. (2) Three distinct persons that are one in nature, one in quality, and one in purpose. (3) Each performs distinct and different offices in creation and salvation, yet are in perfect harmony and unity.

Brotherhood In many ways “brotherhood” is parallel to “Godhood”: 1 Pet. 2:17 “brotherhood’ used here in spiritual rather than phys-ical sense; qualities making a person a brother in Christ. Brethren are perfectly united: one in nature, one in qualities, and one in purpose: 1 Cor. 1:10; Jn. 17:21 Yet still have distinct functions and distinct personalities: Rom. 12:4 Jesus, Is He God?

Who/what was Jesus? He accepted worship: Matt. 2:1-2; 8:2; 9:18; 14:33; 28:9, 17; Jn. 9:38; Heb. 1:6 “My Lord and my God!” : Jn. 20:28; 5:23; Ex. 20:3; Deut. 5:7 Created beings (men & angels) are never to be worshiped: Acts 10:25-26; Rev. 22:8-9; Acts 2:22; Heb. 1:6; Ex. 34:14; 20:3; Deut. 5:7; Matt. 4:10 Jesus, Is He God?
