Fall of the Republic Copy HW Please share your Punic Wars projects with a friend and be prepare to share your thoughts in five minutes

Essential Questions How can societies use what they have learned from the past? How has the relationship between people and their gov’t changed? How do culture and technology reflect values?

Problems between the rich and poor Small farms were destroyed in battles   Many poorer men couldn’t farm their land because they were in the army Patricians were buying up land and creating Latifundia (large estates) Patricians used slaves to do the work on their estates Small farmers headed to the city to find work, but their weren’t many jobs

Solution Roman Politicians tried to solve this problem by providing poor Romans with food and entertainment – “BREAD & CIRCUSES”

Who tried to solve the problem? Tiberius Gracchus and Gaius Gracchus tried to help the Roman people Do you think they were successful?????

What happens to people who try to help the “Average Joe” Tiberius was killed in 133 B.C. Gauis killed in 121 B.C.

The Politicians in Rome were out of control The Army became more powerful Generals started to pay professional soldiers The men were motivated by gaining land and money The men grew loyal to their general, not the Roman Republic Powerful generals began to influence government officials Eventually a general named Sulla took control of Rome, he tried to turn the power back over to the people
