What is texture? Texture is the way something feels. There are two types of texture… Actual or tactile texture that you can feel. Implied or visual texture that looks like it would feel but doesn’t.

What is texture? What makes a texture? Texture is created from two things, memory and pattern. The brain recognizes patterns, remembers they have felt similar things in the past, and tells us what they would feel like.

Which ring feels the smoothest ?

Texture based on memory.

Texture based on memory AND pattern.

Texture based on pattern (probably).

SIZE - SCALE Texture, being created from pattern has the tendency to be seen as pattern or even as shapes if the individual parts become to large.

texture bottle A glass container - must be lidded or enclosed. The bottle needs to be completely filled with the same material. Surface should create an interesting visual texture (to contrast with the tactile texture of the glass). Remember to consider the size of the material in relationship to the size of the container (the pattern needs to be small enough to read as a texture). Ex. 10 grains of rice in a small bottle create a pattern, 1000 grains of rice in a large bottle create a texture. In sketchbook, explain your choice of materials.

texture scavenger hunt Texture scavenger hunt worksheet. Find examples of surfaces that have interesting textures (both actual and visual). Take rubbings of these surfaces on sheet. 10 must be textures based on pattern, 10 must be textures based on memory (not based in pattern). On back of sheet, explain each choice of texture.
