Electrified Vehicle Durability

Vehicle Durability Electrified vehicle durability is an important performance parameter for the long term environmental impact of electrified vehicles Electrified vehicle manufacturers are managing durability to meet customer demands It is possible to establish durability Not every manufacturer is establishing durability in the same way Differences could be due to product differentiation or because of different customer or geographic influences. There are four major vehicle operating conditions that effect durability Vehicle drive cycle or activity and inactivity (discharge rates) Charging type and frequency Ambient temperature during operation Time – calendar life

Vehicle Durability Four major vehicle operating conditions that effect durability Vehicle drive cycle or activity and inactivity (discharge rates) WLTP could be used FEV reported WLTP would need to be modified to reflect real-world operation of EV’s Running successive WLTP cycles could be too severe? Charging type and frequency Data available? Are charging patterns developing over time? (changing) Ambient temperature during operation How much does ambient temperature effect battery durability? Time – calendar life Could testing be accelerated? Coulomb counting or total energy delivered measurements?

Going forward Options Recommend that a GTR is appropriate for electrified vehicle durability and note that it will take time to obtain the information required. (cycle, charging, temperature, and time) Initiate a new mandate? EVE or WLTP or another IWG? Extend the mandate of the EVE to continue research into electrified vehicle durability Gather data to inform a future GTR Recommend to the GRPE that it is premature to develop a GTR for electrified vehicles however, it should be revisited in the future.

Recommendation Begin preparation of a report and recommendations for the GRPE regarding electrified vehicle durability Engage all stakeholders in the development of the report and the recommendation Drafting, review and submission within the timeline outlined in the EVE roadmap
