Content Objective: Literacy Objectives: We will ask and answer questions about informational texts to demonstrate our understanding of the text (RI.3.1) Literacy Objectives: We will write questions about the informational text. We will write answers to the questions citing evidence from the text (W.3.10)

Title: “People Work at Many Jobs” Pages 16-19 in Horizons Book Genre: Nonfiction Article We will read the article about communities together. As we read, think about these questions: WHO? WHAT? WHEN? WHERE? WHY? HOW? Read the text with the class.

Now that we have read the text, we are going to practice asking and writing questions about the text we just read. The questions we ask may begin with any of the 5 W’s: WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, and WHY. We can also use the question word HOW.

Remember, when writing a question, begin the sentence with a capital letter, and end the sentence with a question mark. Fix the sentence below: where can people enjoy themselves in a community

We will practice writing questions about the article “People Work at Many Jobs.” On page 3 of your reading packet, make a list of questions you can ask about this article. Remember, this week we are only asking questions which can be answered by the text. I will give you 5 minutes to write as many questions as you can. GO!

You are going to choose ONE of the questions on your list to copy onto the top of page 4 in your reading packet. Then you will write an answer for the question, using one of the BACK-UP with EVIDENCE sentence stems:

Name: ______________________ Date: __________ Title: “People Work at Many Jobs” (pages 16-19 in Horizons Book) My Question: ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Who? What? Where? When? Why? How? My Answer with Evidence: ______________________________________________________________________________ Back-up with EVIDENCE Based on what I read… According to the text… On page ___ it states... The author states… In the text, it said… On page ___ the author writes… From what I read, I can conclude… ____ because on page ____ it says… The text states…
