Towards the Finnish National Research Information Hub (Tutkimustietovaranto)
Research Information =Descriptive infromation, metadata, on e.g. publications, research data, projects, researchers, research groups and organizations Research Information Hub 2020: ” The Ministry of Education and Culture has set a goal, that in 2020 all information regarding all scientific research made in Finland will be easily accessible via various targeted service portals. Information filled in one system will be automatically translated to other systems, and the administrative workload will be alleviated. ”
Organization of the project The Ministry of Education and Culture (MINEDU) has authorised the implementation of the National Research Information Hub to CSC. The project was launched in 2017 and financed as a part an of a seasonal agreement between the MINEDU’s department of education and science policy and CSC. The Ministry of Education and Culture has nominated the boards and steering groups for the research administration of the information sources and research information hub. Current situation – disintegrated pieces of information Vast amounts of information are constantly being collected and stored in various different locations, such as: Field-specific services International databases Universities’ and other research organizations’ systems Ministry of Education and Culture’s data collection Libraries and citation databases Scientific publishers Research funders’ registers Disintegrated pieces of information have been difficult and laborious to locate and utilize Metadata from various databases and information systems have not been linked – resulting in overlapping and incomplete information entities Lack of cohesive and complete access point for research being conducted in Finland

Goals of the National Research Information Hub Collect and transmit information already located in various systems – not to increase data collection and reporting loads. Integrate and connect the currently disintegrated systems and registers to complement each other. Collect and combine research metadata into more coherent and comprehensive entities. Offer a pathway to original sources. A single, open access point to a comprehensive picture of the research being conducted in Finland. A tool to ease and enhance the transferability and accessibility of information in various services and processes. Decrease the administrative workload – information entered into one system will be automatically translated to other systems.
