Monday, September 11th, 2017 Agenda Do Now Do Now Notes on the spread of Islam. Create a flow chart for the ways Islam spread. Exit ticket Watch the short 3 minute video about the spread of Islam. Find one piece of information that was interesting.

Goals You will be able to summarize the ways Islam was spread by creating a flow chart with 90% accuracy and 100% participation. You will be able to explain how Abbas I’s rule led to a “golden age” within the Islamic empire by writing a journal entry with 80% accuracy.

Essential Questions How did the Arabs spread Islam and create an Empire? How did the empire change after the Umayyads? How did the Turks, Safavids, and Mongols rule their empire?

Founding the Empire Who: Caliphs – the leader of the Muslims after Muhammad. How: No instructions left so choose new leader Why Important: Under these caliphs, the Islamic state started to spread. The 1st 4 caliphs were relatives or close friends of Muhammad. They used the army Muhammad created to conquer more land and spread the religion. By 660s they had an empire that went from India to Northern Africa. The soldiers were very good riders and warriors. They believed that they had a religious duty to spread Islam.

The Umayyads Who: The Umayyads were new caliphs that ruled from Damascus (where is that?) What: Helped spread Islam by not mistreating conquered people Why Important: People were allowed to practice their own religion and lived peacefully. Muslims also entered Spain from Northern Africa in the early 700s. They brought religion, customs, and traditions. In Spain, Muslims spread education as well. Ibn Rushd practiced medicine. Many Muslims influenced the culture in Spain. They were very tolerant of other religions such as the Jewish and christian faiths. Some Muslims also spread Islam through preaching and missionary work. (Indonesia)

Review(ish) question Why was the Arab military succesful?

Division Who: Muslims were divided into two groups: the Sunni and the Shia. What happened: 750 AD Shia revolted and started the Abbasid dynasty. Why important: Ruled to about 1258 AD and improved things. This split is still happening today. Shittes believe Ali, Muhammad’s son in law was the best heir after his death and the Umayyads had no right to rule. Both groups agreed on the basic practices of Islam. Abbasids improved roads and trade routes to bring more people and culture to Bagdad.

The Seljuk Turks Who: Nomads from Asia who were also warriors. How ruled: They allowed the Abbasids to manage the religion but the Sultan, or ruler of the Seljuks ruled. Why Important: Ruled until the Mongols came in 1200s. Abbasids could not hold their empire together and Muslims began to set up their own caliphs. Mongols ended the Arab empire and so new empires were created.

Review(ish) question How did the Sunni and Shia differ? What beliefs did they share? Different opinions about who should lead the empire shared the same basic religious beliefs.

New Empires Who: The Ottomans, the Safavids, the Mongols More who: Mehmett II and Suleiman I Why Important: Even though different, all the empires treated people fairly. The Ottomans were Turkish clans that settled in near the Middle East. The Ottomans conquered the Byzantine empire under Mehmett II (the Conqueror). The Ottomans expanded to N.Africa and ruled for a very long time (1500s) The most famous ruler was Suleiman I, who built schools, temples, and gave laws. Ottomans gave freedom of religion for any non Muslims but they had to pay a tax. The empire became to large and fell. The Safavid dynasty was founded by Ismail, a shia leader who took over. During his reign more Persian ideas and language (Urdu) were spread. It was also during this time when a young Persian leader named Abbas I started to talked with European countries for trade and led to a “golden” age in Persia! The Mongols took over in the late 1500s and treated people fairly under Akbar.

Review (ish) question What is Urdu? Urdu is a language that is based off the Persian Language.

Ways that Islam was spread Now What? Let’s summarize what we have learned in a visual way. We are going to create a flow chart. Look at the board for more information Ways that Islam was spread
