The past – the present – the future Presentation, Budapest May 2019 Hanne Hørl Hansen, DBC, Denmark

AACR2 1978 – with revisions expansion of the original AACR from 1967 published jointly by the American Library Association Canadian Library Association UK Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) Used in or an inspiration in several countries around the world But: not designed for the digital environment did not take into account the conceptual FRBR-models – consolidated version 2017 and renamed as IFLA-LRM (Library Reference Model) – –

AACR2  AACR3? A new version: AACR3? – the plan changed in 2005 A whole new approach? – RDA (developed 2005-2009 published first version 2010) –

What is RDA? is a package of data elements, guidelines, and instructions for creating library and cultural heritage metadata that are well-formed according to international models is designed to take advantage of the efficiencies and flexibility in data capture, storage, retrieval, and display made possible with new database technologies but can be used with different database structures.

What is RDA? has been developed to support linked data applications and the Semantic Web since 2007. aims to become international and includes international communities in further development published online in RDA-Toolkit

RDA – internationally at first RDA was implemented by large institutions in US, Canada, Australia and by British Library next RDA was implemented in many European countries - mostly national libraries or agencies have taken the lead. A cooperation between German-speaking countries provided the German translation. RDA Toolkit includes for now French, German, Spanish, Italian, Norwegian, Finnish, Catalan translations

RDA – internationally also translation has been going on in Israel, China, Japan and in the Arab region. also many countries choose to use the original English text supported by a national profile. EURIG, European RDA Interest Group - launched 2011, includes members from approximately 30 European countries today.

RDA – governance – RDA Board Setting the strategic direction for the development of RDA. Vision: RDA: the global standard enabling discovery of content Represented in the board: * 3 copyright holders (American Library Association, Canadian Federation of Library Associations,CILIP: Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) * National Institution Representatives from: Africa Asia Europe - Ulrike Junger, DNB Latin America and the Caribbean North America Oceania * Chair of RDA Steering Committee * ALA Publishing Representative

Benefits of RDA Traditional cataloguing - based on the manifestation in hand Nádas, Péter Slutningen på en familieroman / Péter Nádas ; på dansk ved Peter Eszterhás. - Århus : Husets Forlag, cop. 1989. – 169 sider ; 21 cm. – (S.O.L.) ISBN: 87-7483-218-2 Originaltitel: Egy családregény vége Originaludgave: 1977 En lille ungarsk dreng oplever, hvorledes bedstefaderens mystiske fortællinger om jødernes tragiske skæbne bliver til bitter virkelighed, da faderen i begyndelsen af 1950'erne bliver offer for en politisk udrensning.

Benefits of RDA RDA cataloguing gives opportunities for new datamodels Work has creator/creator of Nádas, Péter Egy családregény vége Male, Hungarian, Born 1942, Wikipedia link Expression Expression Expression has translator Eszterhás, Peter …. Hungarian German Danish translator of Manifestation Manifestation Printed book Printed book Slutningen på en familieroman Slutningen på en famileroman Husets Forlag 2. udgave ISBN: 87-7483-218-2 Munksgaard/Rosinante …. ISBN 87-16-14299-3 ….

RDA - perspectives From rules for describing manifestations and accesspoints to rules describing all entities – for example for persons: gender, nationality etc. rules decribing the exact kind of relationsship between entities Meaning: data are better fit for new datamodels records not isolated but can evolve over time – for example with new relationships cooperation and reuse of data in a new perspective – from local to global and from physical to link wrapping data up in RDF makes library metadata visible and workable among other resources online

… training will be needed in IFLA LRM – the conceptual model in the terminolgy of the new RDA in finding your way around in application profiles and local policies
