Moving toys A project for class 4

Different types of movement Linear – Reciprocating – Rotary - Oscillating - Intermittent – Irregular -

What parts move? Have a close look at some of the moving toys in the classroom. Which parts turn? Which parts move? Can you see or work out how the parts are attached? Pick one toy and draw and label it.

How does it move? Toys move because they have mechanisms. There are different types of mechanisms that allow different movements. Click here to see the different types of mechanisms.

Mechanisms Cam Bell crank Quick return There are many more, but the cam is the one we are going to concentrate on. Cam challenge!

Your toy Have a look at these toys – can you work out how they move? Discuss with a friend. Use a design sheet to think about who you would like to make a toy for and some ideas for your toy. Click here to see a really good example of a toy design. Share ideas as a class. NEXT

BACK

How it’s done! Back

Make a mechanism Now you have decided what toy to make, you need to practice making your mechanism. Make a card model of your mechanism. When you have done that, complete design sheet 3 where you will finalise your design.

Planning Planning is very important. Use design sheet 4 to list the items you will need. Complete the flow diagram to show the order in which you will make your toy. HAVE FUN 
