Food gives you ENERGY

Nutrients We need food to get energy. However, we also need to have the correct balance of the essential nutrients from the food to stay healthy. They are: Carbohydrates Proteins Lipids Vitamins and Minerals

our main source of energy Carbohydrates – our main source of energy

Energy Drinks are Loaded with sugar

1. Carbohydrates Sugars, Starches and Fibres. Main source of ________. Starches give energy steadily over a long period of time, as they have to be __________ (broken down) first. Starches turn into sugars (_________) when broken down.

2. Proteins – for growth and repair

2. Proteins Proteins contain very little amount of _________. But proteins are very important because they are needed for __________ and __________ of the body.

3. Lipids – the “fat”

3. Lipids Lipids are ______ and _____. Lipids have lots of energy (about twice as much as in ____________). Unused energy is stored in your ______ as lipids (becomes ______ fat).

The body also needs… Vitamins & Minerals – these are needed in small amounts but extremely important for the chemical reactions in the body (e.g. digestion, repairing, respiration, etc.). Water is also needed to enable these chemical reactions.
