The Effect of Ascorbic Acid on Cut Malaysian Mum Flowers Group 2 7A: AGUILAR, RAYNE S. BALDONADO, DANA R. DE LANGE, PAMELA C. PARK, BEOM SOO TIONGCO, JEREMY M. TO BE SUBMITTED TO: MRS. CHERYL CASIMIRO JAN 09

Chapter One Introduction

Chapter One A. Background of the Study: -they would want to see the effect of the length and of how long it will live until it withers and how it will affect the flowers in other ways. What they did is they dipped a MALAYSIAN MUM/CHRYSANTHEMUM flower dipped in water with ascorbic acid. B. Statement of the Problem -how can ascorbic acid on water affect the life and length of a MALAYSIAN MUM/CHRYSANTHEMUM flower?

C. Hypothesis -if ascorbic acid has a positive effect on cut flowers, then they should use that instead of decreasing our natural resources. D. Significance of the Study: -the importance on studying this is to see the effect of ascorbic acid on water to a CHRYSANTHEMUM/MALAYSIAN MUM flower and if it has a good result, they can lessen the consumption of flowers because the flowers would last longer. Chapter One

E. Scope and Limitation -CHRYSANTHEMUM: Chrysanthemum indicum L. -MALAYSIAN MUM(variety): asteraceae compost(family) -ascorbic acid: RHEA (brand) *the researches planned the experiment to last for about five (5) days.

Chapter One Definition of terms: F. CHRYSANTHEMUM -The species of Chrysanthemum are herbaceous perennial plants growing to 50–150 cm tall, with deeply lobed leaves and large flower heads, white, yellow or pink in the wild species. herbaceous perennial plants MALAYSIAN MUM -They are a variety of flowers that are part of the family Asteraceae Compostae (known as the largest family of flowering plants) Ascorbic acid: Cecon ® Drops, Cenolate ®, Cevi-Bid ®, Vicks ® Vitamin C Drops, Vitamin C

Chapter Two Review and related literature

Chapter Two A. Title: VİTAMİN C DEGRADATİON OF ROSE HİPS DURİNG DRYİNG AND EFFECTS OF DRYİNG MEDİUM ON VİTAMİN C DEGRADATİON B. Author: S. Erentürk, M.S. Gülaboğlu, S. Gültekin C. Study: In this study, vitamin C degradation during drying of rose hips was investigated. The degradation of vitamin C was affected by time, temperature and content of moisture. Rate of vitamin C degradation during the drying of whole rose hips was satisfactorily described by a first-order kinetics, and the temperature dependency of the model was described by the Arrhenius relationship. The activation energy and the reaction rate constant were determined as a function of the moisture content. Drying experiments were also conducted on rose hips cut in pieces, and using air-CO 2 mixtures. Cutting the rose hips before drying accelerated the drying process and increased the retention of vitamin C. The loss of vitamin C depended on the level of oxygen in the air-CO 2 mixture used as a drying medium. Source: _47

Chapter Three Methodology

Chapter Three A. Materials: -ascorbic acid (6 tablets) -chrysanthemum (12 pcs) -warm tap water -vase (4 pcs) B. Procedure: 1. Prepare all the materials. 2. Fill up half a vase with the warm tap water. 3. Put the chrysanthemums in. 4. Put the needed amount of ascorbic acid in the half-filled vase 5. Collect data for 5 days.
