What’s the Difference?. Climate or Weather?  Weather is the daily conditions of the atmosphere.  Weather changes day to day.  Weather = one day  Example:
Warm air near the Earth’s surface rises and then cools as it goes back up. Convection happens on a global scale in the atmosphere and causes global winds,

What Causes Different Climates? Final Lesson for Geography Unit 1

Before we start… Let’s get some terminology!

What is Climate?

Climate The weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period. Temperature Humidity Air Pressure (Ie. Cloudy or Sunny) Wind Precipitation Other more specific things!

How Might Climates Differ?

Hamilton

London

Bolivian Desert

What is Latitude?

Latitude The angular distance of a place north or south of the earth's equator, usually expressed in degrees and minutes. The position that you are NORTH and SOUTH in the world! Closest to the Equator is HOTTEST Further away (North and South Poles) are COLDEST

What about East to West?

East to West DOES NOT cause changes in climate!

Ocean Currents?

Ocean Currents An ocean current is a continuous, directed movement of sea water generated by a number of forces acting upon the water This essentially means that Oceans are NOT staying still, and are moving in distinct, organized patterns!

5 Things that Cause Different Climates! The Effect of Latitude The Effect of Moving Air (Winds and Pressure) The Effect of Water Bodies The Effect of Mountains The Effect of Ocean Currents

Your Task! Split up into 5 groups each assigned one of these Access pages 104 to 109 and write down all the information you can for your specific CAUSE Information explaining HOW and WHY your Cause creates different climates
