or go astray or fall away Why Disciples Desert or go astray or fall away Two common reasons given in Scripture for disciples deserting the Lord are (1) they lack a love for the truth, and (2) they give in to desires of the flesh. John 6 illustrates the problem and shows us that the surest preventative for this problem is to trusting in Jesus as the source of spiritual life and truth.

Why Disciples Desert The Scriptures repeatedly give the same two answers: The truth is not what they want Desires of the flesh 2 Timothy 4:3-4, 10 1 Timothy 4:1; 5:11-12 2 Peter 3:16-17; 2:15 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12 Mark 10:17-22 Luke 8:14

Why Disciples Desert The problem is illustrated in John 6 Jesus feeds the 5,000 (6:1-14) People follow Him for food (6:25-27) Jesus explains that He is the bread of life (6:33-35) The Jews complain and murmur (6:41-58) The desires of the flesh deter the love for truth (6:60-61, 63) “From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more.” (John 6:66)
