What is Model UN??? Model United Nations is a simulation of the United Nations General Assembly and other multilateral committees. In Model UN you get to step into the shoes of ambassadors from the current United Nations member states to debate current issues on the organizations agenda. While playing your role as an ambassador/student “delegate”, you make small speeches, prepare draft resolutions (how you think the problem should be solved), negotiate with ally nations (and adversaries sometimes too)… all in the interest of mobilizing “international cooperation” to resolve problems that affect countries and citizens of the world.
Model un is the academic club for you if: You like to debate/argue and come up with solutions to world problems. Play role playing games where you take on the identity of an Ambassador of a foreign country. Persuade to others that you solutions to world problems are the best for everybody. Like to be a part of a team. Model UN is a competition, so we are “Team Sprayberry” working together as one “country” at the conference. You like competition… awards are given out for each committee at the conference. You want to go to your “dream school” for college. Universities really like to see extracurricular clubs that are academic. You want to get to know other students from Cobb County High Schools and other school in the Southeast. Model un is the academic club for you if:
Can I represent my favorite country Can I represent my favorite country? No, we do not get to choose the two countries that we represent, they are assigned. Do we miss any school? Yes, you will miss two days of school in April. (excused absence). Where is the conference? It is on the campus of Kennesaw State University. How do you win an award? Each person on “Team Sprayberry” will represent one of our two assigned countries in a committee. Awards are given to delegates who get resolutions passed, share good ideas, and are active participants in their committees. Those are all individual awards, there are also over all team/delegation awards for schools that have strong members in each committee. How much does it cost? Club dues are $20.00 which cover the t-shirt, the conference fee, and a pizza party. Is it a lot of work? A lot, no… work, yes. You have to get to know our assigned country and then we have to research how that country would respond to the “problems” that our committee is trying to solve. That involves writing a short position paper, and eventually a resolution paper. Can I miss meetings? This is a team effort, so just like any sport, band or team we need you here. You may miss two meetings without penalty. More than two and people on the waiting list will replace you. Meetings are about 30-45 minutes once a month, until March and April when we will meet twice a month. If you think you will have a conflict, you have to make a decision. FAQ
