STORMS

Storms are always associated with low pressure.

THUNDERSTORMS

Warm air rises quickly and condenses to form thunderheads: (cumulonimbus clouds)

Up and down air currents build-up of electrical charge: released as lightning.

TORNADOES

Form from severe thunderstorms.

Vortex (center) has VERY low pressure; extremely strong counterclockwise winds. (300-400 mph)

Damage is severe, but localized. tornado water spout tornado damage

HURRICANES

Originate as low pressure systems over warm waters in late summer.

Constant cycle of evaporation and condensation lowers pressure and strengthens winds. (over 75 mph)

Damage is extensive due to sustained heavy winds over a large area.

Storm surge can cause flooding on the coast. Katrina flooding

Storms get their energy from the condensation of water vapor which releases energy. (540 cal/g) hurricane formation satellite view

Hurricanes weaken over land. Hurricane path
