Biology Do Now 2-27-19 Directions: Take out a sheet of notebook (Do Now sheet) and, then answer each question based on unit 1 notes. 1) Define homeostasis. 2) All living things must be able to _______ and make more living things. 3) Having thumbs is an example of an ________ that allowed many organisms to evolve to grasp things with their hands. 4) Amino acids are the building blocks for ______. 5) The suffix –ose is added to _______, such as, glucose. 6) The ____ site of an enzyme is where the substrate binds to the enzyme.

Biology Do Now 2-27-19 KEY 1) Define homeostasis. Homeostasis is the tendency of a system to maintain internal stability, due to the response to stimulus that would tend to disturb its normal condition or function. 2) All living things must be able to REPRODUCE and make more living things. 3) Having thumbs is an example of an ADAPTATION that allowed many organisms to evolve to grasp things with their hands. 4) Amino acids are the building blocks for PROTEIN. 5) The suffix –ose is added to CARBOHYDRATES, such as, glucose. 6) The ACTIVE site of an enzyme is where the substrate binds to the enzyme.

Objective Students will review concepts covered during unit 1 by answering questions about the characteristics of living things, play a Kahoot and completing a POGIL. Mastery level: 75% (~23/31)or better

Engage Students will brainstorm the characteristics of living things.

Homework Study your notes on unit 1. Play the Kahoot again on your phone. Source: https://create.kahoot.it/share/biology-unit-i- assessment-review/19e41d13-1349-4033-8333- 071f3a23b872

Students will review positive and negative feedback. February 27, 2019

Feedback Loop Problems High levels of substance X causes your body to release of substance Y which breaks down X & decreases the level of substance X back to normal.

Feedback Loop Problems High levels of substance X causes your body to release of substance Y which breaks down X & decreases the level of substance X back to normal. Negative feedback loop

Feedback Loop Problems Low blood oxygen levels causes kidneys to stimulate the production more red blood cells from your long bones which increases oxygen in the blood.

Let’s do a final review for tomorrow’s unit 1 test by playing a Kahoot game. You can play individually or create a team. https://create.kahoot.it/share/biology-unit-i-assessment- review/19e41d13-1349-4033-8333-071f3a23b872

Membrane Structure & Functions POGIL Complete from yesterday Students will need to work in groups of 4 to complete the POGIL and decide who will serve in the following roles: facilitator (manager), spokesperson (presenter), process analyst (reflector/strategy analyst), quality control (recorder).
