New responsibilities in Linac and Undulator Jose Chan is the new Control Account Manager for LCLS Injector and Linac Systems, taking over from Eric Bong. Geoff Pile is the new Control Account Manager for Undulator Systems at ANL, taking over from Steve Milton.

Injector Accelerator Readiness Review Safety Assessment Document The LCLS SAD for Injector Commissioning was approved Jan. 24th. Accelerator Readiness Review (ARR) The ARR for Injector Commissioning was held October 31st. The committee (in part) reconvened March 14th. The four pre-start items were cleared by the time the ARR report was released. Four comments from the SSO were also addressed. Approval to commission was given April 4th.

Injector Accelerator Readiness Review

Injector Commissioning Injector Commissioning is underway. Commissioning has been impeded by faulty hardware Problems with quality of fabrication and installation of diagnostics Instituted an RFI sign-off sheet, requiring approval from physics, engineering, controls, and metrology. ’07 Downtime Installation Sept., Oct., Nov. 2007, a very tight schedule. Installation of BC2 and L3, not L2. Installation to support BTH-West Cable plant installation through the BSY Coordinated through the AD downtime schedule IRR held March 16th. All hardware is RFI or in the shop. Cable plant inst. schedule is tight. Scheduling and coordination between the different disciplines will be vital. See breakout talks

’08 Installation LTU/Undulator/Dump Readiness milestone for Early Occupancy installation held constant at Nov. 1, 2007 Begin installation with: Metrology Beamline supports Cable plant Installation scheduling coordinated by R. M. Boyce Installation contracts need to go to bid this summer. Designs are being completed to support this. See breakout talk

Undulator Systems Components Beam Finder Wire parts are in fabrication. Wire card a SLAC responsibility, design underway. RF Beam Position Monitor in production. Body fabrication is in procurement. First 3-BPM test results look promising, tests are ongoing Vacuum Chamber – next slide These systems are all near the critical path. Quadrupole magnets’ 1st article in measurement at ANL. Support/Mover system fabrication award made. WPM/HLS FDR was held March 22nd Production moving forward See G. Pile’s talk

Undulator vacuum chamber - 1 As described last October, two competing designs were carried to the prototype stage, SS ‘4-Weld’ and Al ‘Clamshell’. A review of Undulator Vacuum Chamber Design Options, was held Feb. 22nd Permeability was a significant concern, and measurements and simulations were presented at the review The 4-Weld design was selected to remain the baseline. Recent measurements of the undulator field inside the SS vacuum chamber have raised concerns. Physics requirements on field variations have been refined. Short scale field variations cannot be measured with sufficient accuracy to remove doubt. No satisfactory QA process for permeability is in hand. The project needs to pursue other alternatives.

Undulator vacuum chamber - 2 The following course of action is being pursued: Stainless steel design Production has been stopped Al extrusion design Fastest option to a full scale prototype, and production Accelerate machining trials & internal polishing tests Cu tube design Develop to the prototype stage as an option for 800eV operations. Al clamshell design Pursue polishing trials on existing chamber samples See breakout talks

Undulator Magnetic Measurement All 40 undulators are at SLAC. The MMF is in production mode, but behind schedule. 6 undulators finished magnetically, but not RFI. Undulators need support shims which have been redesigned and are being remade. Production rate of 1 per week has been demonstrated. “Exceptional” cases continue to be a problem. Adjusting the gap at the rough tuning stage requires a larger-than-specified range of wedge spacers. A broader range of spacers are on order. See breakout talk

CR Impact Uncertainty as to which programs could continue and which needed to be deferred. Led to lost efficiency and lost time. Procurements were put on hold until the impact of the CR was resolved. Linac and Controls BC2, L3 2007 installation was held to schedule. LTU, Und., Dump schedules set to accomplish CD-4a. Additional manpower is needed to recover lost time. Additional costs are needed to speed procurements.

CR Impact Undulator work at ANL The transfer of funding to ANL was slowed until the impact of the CR was resolved. Significant procurements at ANL were put on hold. Delays in ANL deliveries results in delays to Undulator assembly at SLAC Undulator assembly and installation is on the CD-4a critical path Additional manpower and costs are needed to recover lost time.

Issues The ’07 downtime Linac installation schedule is very tight. The schedule shows completion of installation Hardware availability is being closely monitored Controls checkout (last) is at risk. The Undulator vacuum chamber design is changing This is on the critical path. A task force has been formed to manage the parallel options being pursued. Cost and schedule plans for these options are developed. The MMF is in production. Have not yet sustained production throughput.
