By: LaTaya W and Angelia h Taxol vs. Yew Tree Bark By: LaTaya W and Angelia h

History of Taxol & Yew Tree Bark Taxol and Yew Tree Bark are used to fight off Ovarian Cancer and Breast Cancer. They used Yew Tree Bark and processed it into what is known as Taxol. Taxol was tested through 1960-1981 Taxol became an official drug to help fight Ovarian Cancer and Breast Cancer (Along with other diseases and cancers) When they extract the bark from Pacific Yew trees, it leaves behind a poisonous chemical.

Natural Resources Taxol Yew Tree Bark Extracted bark of Yew Tree (15 lbs.) Pine needles of Yew Tree (15 lbs.) Twigs of Yew Tree (15 lbs.) All materials are processed Extracted Yew Tree Bark Pine needles of Yew Tree Twigs of Yew Tree None of the used materials are processed

Renewable or Non-renewable? Yew tree bark is a renewable resource because trees can replenish their supply quickly, but it takes a bit of time for them to. Taxol is made from the bark of a Yew tree, but it is also synthetic and processed. If the materials used to make this specific drug can be replenished quickly, it is renewable. If it takes a few years for the materials used to synthesize this material, then it is non-renewable.

Why do we need it Taxol-It treats diseases and cancers such as Ovarian Cancer, Lung Cancer, Kaposi's Sarcoma, and others. Diseases like that pose life threating consequences and can kill you if it goes untreated. Yew tree bark- it's used to make a lot of things we need such as toxal, medicine, and anti-cancer compounds

The positive impact of synthetic material Taxol works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells in your body. Taxol is used alone or in combination with other cancer medications to treat cancers of the ovary, breast, or lung. It may also be used to treat another form of cancer called Kaposi's sarcoma. Yew tree bark is used for women use it for starting menstruation and causing abortions. Pharmaceutical companies make Taxol from the bark of the yew tree. They extract paclitaxel, leaving the poisonous chemicals in yew behind.

The negative impact of synthetic material taxol Yew tree bark Low blood counts Hair loss Arthralgias and myalgias Peripheral neuropathy Nausea and vomiting Diarrhea Mouth sores Hypersensitivity reaction  All parts of the yew plant are considered poisonous. Yew tree bark can cause severe stomach problems and can cause the heart rate to slow down or speed up dangerously. Signs of poisoning might include nausea, dry mouth, vomiting, stomach pain, dizziness, weakness, nervousness, heart problems, and many other things

Which is better Synthetic or natural material? From knowledge we know that synthetic is processed materials and hypothetically you would think that synthetic is better, but the synthesized materials used it could pose harmful side effects.  Natural material could be both harmful and very effective too. When bark is extracted from the yew trees it leaves behind a dangerous chemical and that chemical could have extra residue left on the bark. Click to add text Click to add text We think that yew tree bark is better because it is used to make lots of things such as taxol, anti-cancer compounds, medicine, hedging, and topiary plants. Without yew tree bark we wouldn't even have taxol or those other materials.
